A custom tune on the evo can show pretty good #'s. A flash will get you to where you wanna be a/f and timing wise, but you can have it fine tuned, squeezing more power out of the car if you get a custom tune!!!

Unless you don't mind the possibility of having to tweak an off-the-shelf flash, I'd go with a custom tune if there is reputable tuner in your area. Unless an off-the-shelf flash is extremely conservative, there's no guarantee that it will not causing knock with your motor. I bought the Vishnu v380 mail-in flash which is supposed to be a conservative flash (supposed to be suitable for 91 Octane) , and with my car running on 92 Octane, the boost went beyond the intended boost levels which led to some pretty good knock events. If it weren't for EvoScan, I would have never known about the knock events. I had to tune down the boost to get knock under control.

If your not modding for a while then a custom is good.
But once you feel you need more power and decide to add more power mods then i'd get a base flash first and save for a custom flash once you get all your parts in.

A tune on the dyno makes your car make good numbers on the dyno. A good tune on the road with a competent tuner makes your car as fast as it can possibly be on the road.
