The aftermarket parts will fail you here in Cali.

Personally i'd leave the tune if your going to run the smog gauntlet. Most tuners I've noticed lean out the car a little bit on your mostly stock evo and up the timing on the lower end before boost.

I would think that means a cleaner running car. Its not like the odbII scanner they plug into you is going to be able to download your map and compare it...

And if you have cam gears, set them back to Zero. Cam timing adjustments can lead to higher hydrocarbon levels.

Well, technically you can pass if the tune doesn't throw a CEL code, and the car is visually compliant.. However if they put a sniffer on the car, then the tune has to also have low emissions.. I really don't know if anyone has even cared to attempt that.

In california, the only legal parts are the stock ones, I don't know of many CARB legal parts for the Evo, very few of the aftermarket making parts for the Evo even mentions them being Smog legal, let alone CARB legal.

I can get my car to pass "Legitimately" in NY since it has a cat, and passes what they look for visually, and the OBD-II check doesnt fail. And I have smog tested the car and it passed within limits. But I don't know of many others who have tried or cared.

I just passed a smog here in SoCal. The car had some slight misfires at low RPM's. I dont know if its the cams or what. I am pretty sure it was my plugs causing the problem though. I passed at the tailpipe with the sniffer and passed the OBD-II port connection. I also have a Magnaflow 3" cat instead of the factory.

A side note my car is registered in TX, I only have to pass the emission part. I dont have to pass visual. The only reason it has to be tested is because the Navy requires it for my base pass.

On an off-topic note.. I have another residence in Texas, I was going to register the Evo down there, and avoid the issues, but what about the inspection down there? In NY State, the inspection stickers are linked to the registration system, and if your car doesn't have a current inspection, you can't renew your registration. I don't want to have to drive my car down there to get it inspected just to renew the registration.

Actually my car has never been inspected in TX. I bought it here in SoCal and it has never been to TX. I did the initial registration when I was on vacation and told them that the car was in CA and I was driving my truck. I just renewed it last month on the net and no problem there either.

Good info, I have family up here from Texas, and was debating on whether or not to have them register the car down there for me, but my concern was whether or not I'd have to get the car inspected next time around to renew it.. Keeping the car registered out of state keeps me from having to worry about inspections up here.
