well the code was initially hacked together just to get the loggers working. I believe both evoscan and mitsulogger just grabbed the first FTDI device they found, with plans to fix any issues later on. well now its later on.
does anyone reccommend any serial to USB devices for the LC-1?

Nah, you don't need to pay additional for upgrades, the goal of the project is to get everyone out there datalogging as cheaply as possible 
but if you feel really guilty about using all these cool new features without paying, you are more than welcome to donate to paypal@limitless.co.nz (no more than a small amount though cause I don't want people to think they have to)

For the amount of time I spend using your product and your hard work, and that I can't even remember paying any amount for it but $20 - 30, I just had to drop off a little change.
