Question O2 Sensor Question

Hi Guys,

I put in an after market front pipe and now have the dreaded CEL.

I am looking at fixing this in the ECU but before I can I need to understand the rear O2 sensor.

Q) Why do we get 0-5volt readings, isn't it a narrowband sensor?

Cheers
Dave

Well, I'm afraid I can't answer your question about the voltages. But I can tell you what I know;

- I have been able to successfully avoid a CEL from the 2nd O2 sensor by using the "spark plug anti-fouler method" described here on the forum. I also have a complete turbo back exhaust with no catalyst. I ended up having success with a single, longer spark plug anti-fouler and then drilling it out almost all the way to the end so the O2 sensor will fit inside it. No SES after more than 2 months now. If you search the forum for "spark plug antifouler" I'm sure you'll find a how-to.

- I have read about a method of "disabling" the second O2 sensor so that it can be completely disconnected. This involved changing some values in the ECU (using ECUFlash and a Tactrix cable for example), and then also using a resistor to simulate the load of the O2 senor heater. AFAIK, no one has figured out how to completely disable the second O2 in the ECU yet, but that might be coming some day.

Hope that helps!

Thanks RedV,

I am aware of both of those methods, however I guess for my own interest I would like to find out exactly what is going on and fix it proper

We tried the above method as well on my friends car, but with one antifouler. It worked for 2 weeks without cel until this yesterday. He will put the second one on today.

the rear o2 sensor is a narrow band. it goes from 0 - 1 volt. the factory use it to monitor the efficiency of the converter. if the reading from the rear o2 sensor is very close to the o2 sensor in the front for more the a few seconds then it will turn on the check engine light. where did you see it go to 5volts?

if you like I can post a graph that shows it going up to 5V when on boost...
