I know Jestr has made in the High 500's at a local mustang dyno here before.. That guy can really tune stock ecu very well.. Every car i have seen him tune not only makes power but it runs well at the track!!

Its really odd how that one works.

You can take 2 identical motors, set the up with piston to wall thats .003-.004 and it will sound like a diesel when its running and then take and set up a looser motor at .005-.006 and its as quiet as stock.

Then on top of it neither seem to make any knock that you wouldnt expect under WOT, but will part throttle knock like a son of a gun.

dunno, but sometimes I really wish the knock was load definable and rpm definable.

Yea its really odd. I tried to tune my friends car which had a built 2.3 and I just couldn't do it. It was always getting knock no matter what I did. We tried race gas and it just didn't matter. The motor was so damm noisy. Knock controll on and off below certain loads and RPM's sounds easy enough to impliment. But I think thats more of a temporary fix. To compete with standalone, the stock ECU's knock algorithim will really have to be completly tunable.

Have you ever tried playing with the knock filters?

Have you ever listened to a motor using a microphone and headset? Its quite an eye opening experience. I've noticed that motors, especially built ones are extremely noise during low load low rpm conditions. Upon higher rpm and boost conditions the motor tends to quiet down. It gets to the point where it almost sounds sewing machine smooth once you tune it in well. I encourage you to built your own microphone/headset setup and give it a try yourself.

I think that's a cool car because the setup is so old school.

It sounds like you want to just enjoy your recent investment in parts. Sure not getting 100 percent out of it is not cool but you can drive it with a more conservative tune on the stock ecu and maf and then wait/save until you can get a stand alone. buying a possible temporary solution will just cost more in the end. If it were me I would run what I have knowing it will be limited possibly and then save my pennies and buy a solution that is known to work. AEM would be ECU of choice simply due to the raw numbers of evo's that have successfullyl run it,the numbers of tuners available and the feedback you could receive based on others experiences

Grats on the build and good luck

Everyone is so quick to burn money on that damn AEM. Read up on where they are with the stock ECU, you'll be amazed how quickly its catching up to the AEM Pro. Mellon already has an AEM Pro sitting in his garage too but I don't think he'll need it anytime soon.

The other nice thing about the stock ecu is that you have to actually try to hurt a motor with it. Well that is until you redo the code in it such that the knock sensor is ignored and you jack the timing up all the while experiencing a fuel pump failure. Ask me how I know.
