Project87

Ive been working on a 87oct tune for a few months here. I have a thread posted on SoCalEvo.net about it. If you want the tune, look for that thread over there.

here is a log on 87 with the tune i posted, no gimmicks. Frwy, night time, after a few WOT logs (this a small sample from the end of a 680kb log)

Im getting (on average) 25mpg, and still making a bunch of power on 87... all thanks to the wonderful support I get on this most beneficial forum

Note: at this point i was watching my EGT's, and they do start to creep over 1300°F after long WOT pulls in 5th gear. This indicates to me that the limits of timing and boost are getting very close on this octane.

1300F egt's? That's cold.

1650F is where you don't want to pull much past.

^heh... thats steel cutting temps ...

they werent too bad. I looked down and saw 1400 and climbing and decided to let off.

this was on stock exhaust, Tanabe DP and a K&N... (ive sold off all my parts to pay for school )

p.s. no way i would ever suggest using this tune for racing/togei'ing/dragging ...but it sure works for those Frwy stoplight drags ...lol.

lol after 28 psi I can never go back to 18psi... even if that means I could save $2.50 a tank.

I'm with you. Gas prices are just the cost of admission.

Better yet, Venezuela. I remember reading recently on CNN they are the cheapest in the world at like $0.13/gallon.

It is true that the US is one of the cheapest in the world, but we probably do have the longest commutes just to get to work. Heck, when I was working downtown, it would take me 2 hours each way just to get to and from work.

lol... you have to remember that the US has NO public transportation (worth taking)

If i could get to work everyday on a subway/train/bus/trolley/etc. Id be running MS 109 and 35psi everyday... in the meantime, or until i start making more $$, im running 87 and 18psi. Damn this economy, my dollar is prettymuch worthless now.

One main reason i made this map was to see the limits of timing across all areas. I developed the timing and fuel maps by targeting all the load areas, i.e. just 100 load then tune for just 150 load and then tune 200load.

Id almost say that you could run this tune with 91oct, and go out and race on it for a few laps (not good enough to combat heatsoak, tho).

I used to take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) into the city every single day. There is also Caltrain for people commuting from the south bay to the city.

I will agree with you though that the Los Angeles/socal area is severely lacking in the public trans dept. Bay Area is much better in this regard.

Redline how close is your 87 octane map to the stock "low octane" map for your evo 8? I have and evo 9 and am trying to draw a conclusion.

By the way, actual Gas price in Germany 1.54 EUR per Liter or 2.38 USD per liter.
That is 9 USD per gallon.
I commute by train. Driving my EVO only for fun.

Good job! But I gotta agree with Honki24, I'm not going back to low boost. I got a second car for that kind of power (or lack thereof) and regular unleaded

Nevertheless, you should post up your timing maps and a log that would show your AFR's.

There is pretty much no public transit system at all in my state. If I could take a subway or train to commute I would be in heaven. Regardless of the cost of gas in any country, we all budget accordingly for a certain amount. When it has increased 50% in 2 months....people start to feel the effects everywhere. I think an alky injection system would be a great way to use low octane fuel for cruising while still having the ability to tune for higher power when you "feel the need for raw power".

It all depends on the variance in cost from low octane to high octane though. Its $4.00/gal for 87 octane here and around $4.20 for 93. At the moment, a vartiance of around $3-4 a tank isn't a concern. I'm more interested in tuning for better cruising MPG regardless of the octane.
