fed up with knock control

I had the same problem for 9 months. It is very annoying when you try to get into traffic. I had as much as 44 counts of knock at 3200 rpm. at 50% throttle. I had two different tuners try to tune it and still could not get rid of the knock. Well i got sick and tired of it enough is enough. I was told it could be alot of things like the knock sensor, tranny, transfer case, clutch, worn out turbo. I replaced the knock sensor and still the same. The i got a smokin deal on a gt35r set up and still the same. Fixed all boost leaks and exhaust leaks and nothing changed. So i desided to but another stock tranny. and WOW IT FIXED THE PROBLEM. The tranny would rattle so much that i even got 18 to 21 counts of knock sitting at the light. The tranny felt strong and did not grind at all but just had to much chatter and made alot of phantom knock. Sorry for the long post but just wanted to share the nightmare with everybody. Now its fixed runs perfect and very strong with 2 counts of knock on top end.

Word. This is going to make me have to port over all my 94170014 stuff over to a 15 rom.

Even though a 44 isn't possible that's still interesting. I've heard that a worn input shaft in the 03 04 sometimes sets off the knock sensor. That doesn't explain the similar conditions we've had, because I didn't change my tranny but my problem still went away. Hmm....

Can someone tell me, why having a different ROM can cause low load low rpm knock?
Same settings, same everything — no knock on my native 94170008, as soon as i switch to 94170015, it knocks between 2500-3500 rpm, not even in boost, so below 100 load.. it's retarded...

We had a couple guys have the same issue, although not as high knock counts. After getting a built trans or updated trans the knock went away.

They where both 03-04's.

Knock filters are probably changed between the two ROMs.

Aren't those "knock filter" maps supposedly not even filter maps but something else?

Yeah aren't those some kind of EGR maps?
But even if there are knock maps there that are different, 0015 is a dealer update to 0008, correct? And being that 03 and 04 cars probably have identical hardware/drivetrain, why would they switch the filtering.. And even if they did, does every dealer updated car do it i wonder, or is it isolated to certain cars..?

Yep, but there are going to be some knock filters. In looking through the FSM a few nights ago, I also found that the knock sum algorithm is an adaptive algorithm, so how interprets the knock filter will change over time.

Wouldn't reflashing a different ROM reset it?

On a 9 things get reset. On 8's not so much.

mrfred, that completely blows that the knock sensor is adaptive. So you tune the car by flashing a bunch, but each time you do on a 9 you reset it. Then the ecu adapts and "learns" over time.

Are you sure the "learning" process in the FSM isn't the "learning" of the octane IE: the octane number and low octane maps?

talking about this, two days ago i upgrade from 94170008 to 94170015,the knock filter map 1 is different on the 94170015,i just left it like that and i flash the car, well the car just started knocking all the time,36 knock all over.....i flashed the 94170008 again to see if it fix the problem and still it didnt,i drove the car for the day and all of a sudden the car went back to normal again,no knock....so like you guys are saying, could it be the knock sensor just relearn again??? could that explained the problem i had
