Non Waste Spark Coil On Plug with Stock ECU

Ok, I was wondering has anyone had the same idea, oh yeah i bet everyone has. I highly doubt the Factory ecu has the extra transistors or what ever drivers it needs to drive another two coils. But I figured I would ask if someone knew. Ive seen the crazy stuff that has been done with the stock managment system already, and i was just wondering if it could be taken a stept further I don't know much about the innerworkings of the ECU, but I do know a lot about wiring and how most of the car works. anyone wanna help me make this work. Oh and if your asking why i don't want waste spark, Because... I just don't.

I really don't see an advantage to what you want to do just because you don't want waste spark.

Well, The coil and spark plugs will last longer. Also the coils won't heat up as much and you would be able to sustain more constant ignition timing and spark strength at high revs. These things are kinda negligible. But in the end a true sequentially individually fired coil on plug system should have been what the car was manufactured with. I bet the car will be even better with this set up. The hierarchy of ignition systems is as follows but not listing all of them.

Points trigger with a rotary distributor
is not as good as
Electronically triggered Coil with rotary distributor
is not as good as
waste spark coils with spark leads to a pair of combustion chambers, Like a Miata or 3000gt
is not as good as
Hybrid Coil On Plug With waste spark lead, evo
is not as good as
Individual sequential fire coil with leads, like a corvette
is not as good as
Individual Coil on Plug, like a K series or a Modern Corolla
is not as good as
Individual CDI Coil Packs, Most Race cars.

So yeah I don't want to make a CDI Driver yet, but it would be nice to drive some coils sequentially.

I don't get it, the stock waste spark system can handle 500-600awhp.

but replacing the stock coils with the Spoolin up kit or some other similar diy COP Kit reaps other benefits than power. Im not hell bent on making my car sequentially fired, i just wanted to see if someone else has done so, or where they left off. The aspects i lack in are ecu programming and just other modifications to the ecu that would need to be done to get another to out-puts from it to drive 2 more coils. Im Most likely gonna just end up making a paired coil on plug set up like everyone else does.

I've been working with the guys at SPDI Spark since mid-winter or so testing a new ignition system on my Evo. At first we had to use 2 SPDI modules in order to retain the wasted spark design, however today I tested a new firmware which uses only 1 module in a sequential firing configuration. It's still in it's experimental stages and there are some bugs to work out, which I expect to be done in the next couple of weeks. So it is do-able.

interesting so it finds a way via some math to detect which cylinder is next in line for firing.

Hey,

I am part of the R&D team at SPDI, the system creates a virtual cam. As Raptord said it is possible but there is some work to be done. Should be a few more weeks

Yes actually. We now have a single unit wasted spark set up that converts it to sequential. recent testing some very interesting spark profiles for different levels of boost and rich/lean conditions.

Here is a vid on how the spark works and why it is different:
