How do I get into disassembly?

Ive been a member of Active Matrix and OpenEcu for a while, but I havent beenable to figure out how one starts in the direction of learning how to disassemble an ECU.

I basically want to know:
How do I set up a bench ECU tester/emulator?
What program languages do i need to know?
What program(s) do people use to read the ECU?
Any links to good reading? (i read a LOT on all of these forums already)

Why? Im about to finish my degree in Mechanical Engineering, and figure that knowing how to disassemble ECU's would be something that could set me apart from other engineers going into the automotive field. And, I would like to be able to add-to/help the community like all the big guys

There is a thread in THIS forum, that I posted in which gives instructions on how to use IDAPro.

Answers to your questions:
1) you don't need to bench an ECU, most of us use the SHSIM software
2) assembly - Motorola sh2 is what is used in the CT9A series car
3) ecuflash to read/write, idapro to disassemble, gnu-as to assemble, scripts to patch
4) hrmmmmm not really - find that thread i talked about b4.. thats probably a good starting point!

1) true if you are not looking after some not so obvious output port pins
2) Actually it is Hitachi/Renesas SH7052/7055.

Thanks Tephra/acamus
I get that each ECU/chipset has its own def's for disassebly, is that provided for in IDApro? or is that something that I would have to write/find-online?
And, should I buy IDApro, or can the free version do the job?

i figure im gonna need to do a LOT more reading before i can get moving here...lol, that or start working towards my EE/Computer Prog. Degree

There is a free version of Idapro - Version 4.9 or something...

its quiet expensive, so none of us have bought it...

-- you need to define everything from scratch basically...

If google for 5.2 version does not work for you, I may build SH processor plugin for 4.9 and post it

New question: In the free version of IDA, it only has Intel processors... is there a way to add the def for the Hitachi?
