Visiting Germany

My wife and I are going to Germany in November. One of my main goals is to make it to the Nurburgring. I’m not thrilled with the idea of taking a lap on the world’s greatest race track in a typical floppy POS rental car. Does anyone know of any rental car companies in Germany that has MINIs? We will most likely be flying into Stuttgart or Frankfurt. I figure we will have better luck finding a place that rents MINIs than one that would have Evolutions, as much as I would love to drive a car like mine on the track.

It looks like we will be doing a drive up/down(?) the Rhine, hit some museums and castles and drinking some beer. If anyone has other suggestions for things to do or places to stay in southern Germany we would be interested in hearing them.

Thanks,
Mike

Well I can help you when it comes to the Ring.

You can easily rent a SLK 200. My buddy rented one and it was supercharged and pretty damn quick. Who knows maybe I might be in the area with the VI. You can basicly go to the Europcar site and pick something out. http://www.europcar.com/ If you want something special I would call them.

Your on the right track. Between the castles, museums, autobahn, and whinerys you should be good. Theres more than enough to do. Im American Military so I wont steer you wrong

Anyother Qs just holla at me

I think we’ve settled on a Golf from Avis with GPS. It is not as fast as it could be, but overall for the trip it is probably the best compromise. We’ve got a hotel in Nurburg for the first night, and then we will hit the Ring for the afternoon of the 9th, then Aachen on the 10th, followed by Trier and Heidleburg. That is the plan for right now. We may substitute Munich for Achen or Heidleburg, but we are still up in the air with that.

what a great way to be something more than a picture taker. I can't get around the 20 hours of plane time just to look at places there are thousands of pictures of.
Is there a notable track in Spain? the wife is starting to make my life miserable.

In Spain you have Velencia and Barcelona. I’m not sure if they have track days or what. I think the Nurburgring is pretty unique as far as letting you just buy a few laps and playing on the track.

Best wishes,

Last week my wife and I went to Germany to play tourist. I made it know early in the planning process that we would be going to the Nurburgring. I don’t make too many firm demands for our trips, but this was one time where I made my intentions clear. Luckily Rachel is into cars and since she follows F-1 with me she was totally into doing some laps of the Nordschleife. Below is a link to the little webpage I put together with some of my pics and a more detailed description of events. Unfortunately, they do not allow pictures or video to be taken while you are on track and we chose to respect that rule, so no in car action. I can say it was amazing though!

We also hit Trier, Luxumbourg, Cologne during St. Martin's Day (think New Orlean's style Carnival without the beads, but just as much booze) and we drove down a nice stretch of the Rhine. The rental car company hooked us up with a Z4 for 15 euros more a day than we would have spent on the VW Golf we were supposed to get. The weather was nice most of the trip so we spent a lot of time with the top down.

Best wishes,
Mike

I wasn't absolutely positive when we were going to be there since we were flying standby. I work for an airline. It was damn cool though. I’m still grinning.
