US EVO's ARE CRAP!!!??
I have a 384 WHP EVO and I have not one issue with it. I drive it very hard and I have about 45k on it. All parts on the car have been from AMS and Buschur Racing. The car is awesome, about 80% of the people that have Evos should be shoot. They cant drive and don't know how to put a car together. I love EVOs if you guys think this car breaks down then go buy something else and then we will see.
europe evo
i have mine since april 2006 and now have 26000 km and never had any problem. i always go on schedule with the maintenance also
the car always works good and most of the time i drive it pretty hard if traffic allows it
i love

There are more in Asia and in Europe since those countries had been getting Evos since its birth! And so far, I had never heard of much issues. Check Lancerregister or lancer-evo.net. We also have highly modified Evos that go as far as the 1993 model and so far, they never gave much headaches. Mine is being driven daily in heavy heavy stop and go traffic, and yet, the car is still perfect.
Avg. fuel consumption is about 10-13 mpg, and never seen a problem yet, and he has done about 23000 miles.. But Eurospec is equipped with Bridgestone potenza instead of the Advan A-046
There is also one over here that has soon done 100000 miles on an Evo IX without any problem as far as I know
There is a distinct difference in driving style between most american drivers and the rest of the world. Much of it is probably inexperience.
Only in america will you see 16 year olds driving brand new expensive cars. The Evo and other performance cars are fairly expensive and usually not affordable as a first car, plus fees, surcharges, restrictions, etc, that usually means the owners of these cars are generally a bit older and less abusive to their cars.
American car culture is also all about drag racing from light to light, aka street racing.. This kind of aggressive driving is way more abusive to an AWD car than high-speed driving and rolling through the twisties.
Also, in america you see alot of cars modified "In excess".. Their turbos are too big, suspension is too low, stereos are too loud, etc.. This goes along with the personalities of the people driving them.
And even more so, the cars are "Too butchered" as many of these kids pay a fortune in parts, yet skimp on proper and safe installation, or do half-assed jobs of it.. So its no surprise to see complaints about cars, products, parts, tunes, etc..
"Do it Yourself" Used to mean figuring it all out yourself, without instructions, and taking the time to do it right. Now its about being able to read instructions and bolt on a part in 15 minutes and then whine if it doesn't fit perfectly, or make their *****, I mean inflated dyno numbers larger.

OT: (in response to Malibu's post) Before I modded my Evo, I got manuals for it and did intese research. Not because a GT35R or GT42R had been proven to give high HP numbers, does not mean I ought to do the same thing. Every bit of part I placed in was studied and researched. The Jun engine components, the custom GT35R manifold, Sard fuel system, Project MU brakes, etc., each and every part was matched to my requirements.
People were bashing me on spending too much for a measley 500whp, I dont care, they have not driven my car yet. And all I can say is it was worth more than what I spent. The power is awesome, it can take tight turns and chicanes, it can stand hard launches, but most of all and the most important to me, it drives like an everyday garden fresh car, in Manila traiffic conditions and in Manila weather.
Why am I sharing this? Coz as a car enthusiast and being experienced with 3 Evos from the Evo 6 to 7 and now a 5, I still had to read everrything properly to make sure that things does not mess up. I am not only after numbers, I am after it lasting long. Money spent is not only about making numbers, but it is how long it can last your car! I would rather spend $100k for just 500whp that will last me 5 or more years of trackdays, stop and go traffic, and funruns rather than 100k for 800 to 1000whp but will only last me a few months, now that is a waste of money! That is why research and education is very important before modifying your car.
Wanted to share this too. I was speaking to a kid here, and I shared my insights why Evos are seen more of a drag car than a circuit car. And he goes something like "coz dragracingf your car is cheaper than bringing it to the race course and it is easier to test the performance of your car in the drag strip"... I was like
I wanted to answer "got money to buy an Evo but got no money to run it properly"...

Issue is the driver! People think the car is bullet proff and they can do whatever they want. Wrong.
I got 53k on my 05 RS I did change pads, and rear light bulb. stock clutch started to slip at 43k miles after adding more power to the car.
So far no problems, do i beat on the car? sometimes.

I do drive my car fast sometimes but never in excess. I broke the T-case at 30k mi with still the stock clutch and BR stage 1.
I think this is not normal, T-case ($3000) should not break this way. Something was wrong; either the dealer who serviced my car or the design of the T-case.
As far as the driver, I don't think I'm the problem honestly. I've driven only MT for the last 8 years, heal-toe & double-clutch and never have any problem before the Evo.

I highly doubt that my driving skills ****ed up the drivetrain. I don't shift hard, I always make sure gears are ok before to drop the clutch. When I brake I always double clutch and rev-match.
Once again, regarding the clutch, mine is still stock.

I didn't read the whole thread, but by the way it sounds like you take care of it it is problably normal noise. A bad transfer case sounds like your car has a supercharged on it like a modded 03+ cobra. All evo's have gear whine that is pronounced much deeper in higher gears.
