Evo knock Post tune

Hi everyone, I recently had my evo tuned and it made 338hp and 350tq at 24 psi. The mods are full turbo back exhaust, titek 02 housing, ets licp, walbro 255, 3-port and perrin intake.

Now my concern is that my check engine light sometimes flashes under heavy boost sometimes in 3rd gear (i have a evo 9 mr). The light doesn't always flash under heavy boost though.

From what i understand, Stock evo's knock and i believe the tuner enabled the CEL light to flash when knock occurs in the Tephra mod.

1. So from my understanding if the tephra mod was enabled on the stock evo tune the light would still flash right?

2. Does this happen with your evo?

3. How worried should i be?

4. What should i do?

5. My tuner said that my car get's very hot and recommends that i get a bigger intercooler to help out with the heat soak.

Help me out here and send me your advice please. Thanks

you need to log some pulls and see how high the knock is actually reaching but I wouldn't keep getting on it without being sure. You have no idea how much counts it is actually reaching until you log it.

Definitely log it like Boost Inspired mentioned. (I went to High School in Killeen!)

It could be 3-5 counts of knock like dahuii77 said, but the tuner can adjust that in the ROM. I've seen a "tuned" rom that had the knock light setting at 8 counts for slow flash and 12 counts for fast flash by a very reputable tuner.

I wouldn't want 3 counts of knock. Have the tuner find it and fix it.

I'll get the tuner to do some logs.

Can heat soak cause the engine to knock?
Also, can increasing the load index or weight in the car cause the engine to knock?

So sometimes when you go WOT, the Cel light flashes a couple of times?

Yes, what gear was the car tuned in? Is it a slow knock or a fast knock? Either way I would bring it back to him and say you want it eliminated. You may lose a tiny bit of power but for a sound running car it's more than worth it.

I used to have that issue. Changed back to stock plugs and it got a little better. Got it tuned by a better tuner. Problem solved

Does it flash quickly or slowly? My tuner did mine with the tephra mod and showed me when it flashes slowly, you are ok, when it flashes quickly, stay off it, for a while, do some logs and call him.

Nothing to worry about for you, but for OP it could be different.

I'd worry, unless it's logged and verified.

OP maybe ok, but we don't know until it's verified. I agree with the second part.

I'm worried that a lot of us are getting too comfortable. I agree 3 counts of knock isn't really that much, but it should be looked into. We don't know if it is 3-5 counts or 11+ counts.

I've seen many tunes that have the knock settings set so high that it's unlikely you'd see it flash. These aren't on built motors that are noisy, these are on stock blocks with bolt ons.

Two examples of customers I had who have had their knock settings adjusted by reputable tuners. I've fixed their issues and lowered the knock flash settings to the standard 3/6 counts. One had the knock setting to flash only over 350 Load. He wasn't close to hitting that load, but was getting over 20 counts of knock consistantly. The other had the slow and fast flash set up over double the default settings in Tephra ROM. He was probably knocking all day long.

Lmao that is the WRONG advice to give that means your car is pulling timing and not running optimal, only reason why your car hasnt blown up is because you have a knock sensor that has broken yet. Anyway yes you need to have your tuner relook at your map 3-4 counts of knock is NOT GOOD. Also Im assuming when you got tuned the temperature was different? theres a compensation map in there that may need to be adjusted. Honestly I had a similar issue with timing on tephra a long time ago, previously the timing I ran using the factory style map did not show any knock but as soon as I switched to tephra it showed knock, updated to the newest version didnt have any issues.

(also back in the day my skill wasnt nearly as high as it is now, tephra has ALOT more resolution) oh and your stock FMIC is fine at those levels.

Thank you all for the Advice. I went back to my tuner, we changed the spark plugs and he logged the car. He said that i shouldn't worry about the CEL light flashing slowly. Even when the light flashes I don't feel like the car is losing power or anything like that. I let him drive the car and well the light no longer flashed for the rest of the day.

I'll update by the end of the week if I see any Flashing CEL
