Ecutek pros & cons :helpme:

Hi all,

Just last week I picked up an Evo VII GTA and being a fresh import I wanted to get it dyno tuned for Australian fuels etc.

The guys at the tuning house I went to were brilliant, courteous & really professional in their explanations of what was going on with the tune using Ecutek.

My problem is, where I live is a good 2600km round trip from the nearest Ecutek master tuner, and at the time I wasn't informed that once you used Ecutek, you have to do all of your tuning using Ecutek.

My Evo is standard, with a very expensive and what could possibly be usless tune. The tuners only picked up 24kw at the wheels, but drivability is much better and it's producing much more usable power in the lower/mid rev range.

I've ordered a 3" mandrel bent turbo back exhaust, a new front mount intercooler (the oem one was damaged) a Walbro 255lph pump and a drop in K&N panel filter

It's my understanding that all of these mods, even though small, will need changes to be made to the tune I am running.

What are my options, would you stick with Ecutek and hope they agree to send out rom files, or do I have to send my ecu back to have it deleted and a standard JDM tune replaced.

Ideally using the tuning methods of the best available tuner closest. Its just a tool anyway.

Theres an ECU Unlocker program that can be used with ECUFlash to pull the ECUtek ROM off the ECU. No need to send it back.

This is true. I bought my evo with an ECUTEK tune and I used the ecu unlocker program to read my map. Now I can view, alter and reflash my maps with ECUFlash.

Excellent guys! thanks.

Could you send me a link please to the ecu unlocker program?

Don't get me wrong, the tuning guys knew their stuff, they were great, even though the gains were small, the driveability of the whole car changed for the better.

Congrats on your new ride! I would go with the ecu unlocker program everyone mentioned. 2600 km is way to far to drive if you need a tune unless Mark Webber is going to be doing it

I'm on the mobile site ATM (holiday FTMFW) but this is the correct link.

After unlocking and reading you have a few options.

1. Learn to tune yourself, there is a thread in here about how to tune evos. (This is the option I'm running with when my car is running again).
2. Find a local tuner.
3. Email tune with whoever you like. There are some pretty well respected email tuners in the USA who you can't go wrong with.

Sounds like a plan, thanks guys. I've got the new cooler, exhaust and ebc on board. I'll put the fuel pump in this weekend. I've ordered a tactrix box and bought a laptop that comes loaded with, Ecuflash, Evoscan, and Virtual Dyno.

I downloaded the .exe and when I open it, all I come up with is "active matrix" banner. Is there something I am supposed to do to run the program?

IIRC from when I used it, that banner is the program running. With that banner open, connect your ODB2 cable and red the ROM with ECUFlash.

Hi guys this is my first post! Woohoo!

I have been working with Michael_GTA this afternoon on extracting the EcuTek custom file from his car and with success. It seems the Ecu Unlocker program works quite well.

I have a slight issue though. The map extracted from the vehicle has strange RPM and Load axis values. I opened a compare file (Stock JDM Evo7 ) and it was fine, but the original file we extracted read something like 4 6578 9 3425 1 5674 etc. Even the injector scaling said it had 2cc injectors lol could this be a definitions issue? or that it is reading a different axis value due to being flashed and locked to EcuTek?

Anyone heard of, or encounterd this issue?

Cheers, Sasha

Sounds like a definition issue, I had the same thing with the wagon definition. My solution was to use a specific version of ECUFlash.

Take a screenshot of one of the maps and post it up so we can see. What is the rom and def file IDs?

Attached are screen dumps of the extracted files. As you can see it's all over the place.

Hrmm, at face value it looks like a definition issue. I'll have a dig around tomorrow morning (its getting late and I had a 4am start but at least the chiefs beat the brumbies ).

If anyone has a more suitable definition I am keen to try it. I have been using the compare function at the moment and comparing the extracted file against a stock JDM file which reads correctly to gather what the cells im looking at are relative to in the corresponding load and RPM zones.
