MAP EF2.5 Evo 8 E85 Results & Data

2 Attachment(s)
Hello all,

MAP has given me the very generous opportunity to do a before/after test of their new, unreleased EF2.5 turbo for the Evo 8/9. I will be tuning it on both 91/E85 in the upcoming weeks.

It will be tested on my '04 Evo 8 RS stock block/stock head @ 107k miles, with the following mods currently:

Evo 8 10.5 stock turbo
GSC S1 cams
ETS LICP v2
XS Engineering IC
Evo 9 BOV
ACT clutch
Full turboback 3" exhaust
Titek O2 housing
Stock airbox
Bosch EV14 1200cc high impedance injectors
Walbro 255

On this setup, the car dynoed 371 whp/360 wtq on E85 @ 27 psi, and 320 whp/327 wtq on 91 @ 25 psi. I will RE-DYNO with another baseline before bolting on the EF2.5.

Along with the EF2.5, the following will be added:
PPI intake + open filter
Synapse DV

I don't feel like crushing the Evo 9 BOV so the Synapse will be added, and the intake should eliminate any restrictions caused by the stock airbox.

On the EF2.5, I will post both the results of a 91 retune and E85 retune. Based on fuzzy math and rough estimates, I expect to make roughly 500 whp/400-420 wtq on E85 @ 30 psi, and 400-420 whp/380 wtq @ 27ish psi on 91 pump. I will be tuning for reliability, not max power, so others may be able to push the turbo/stock block further.

Additional info: The EF2.5 will have full porting done, but not the anti-surge cover so that spool is not affected.

Looking forward to posting results up for the Evo community.

RESULTS!

FINALLY! HERE ARE (EARLY) RESULTS!!

Tom @ Tscompusa worked a ****ing miracle! My previous tuner didn't know WTF he was doing, and some of my issues stemmed from his tune. In ONE NIGHT Tom did more than my previous tuner did in a WHOLE WEEK. Including, y'know, actually getting the ****ing car to run right!

HERE IS THE GRAPH

http://tscomptuned.net/_images/dyno-...riley-temp.jpg

The Walbro needs the relief valve pushed in more and it needs fresh plugs, but it drives GREAT. Tons of power and response. Tom says there's another 50-60 whp in it!! Aw yeah.

Also, the car idles better than ever and the throttle response and shifting is SO SMOOTH. Absolutely awesome.

So after I throw new spark plugs in tomorrow and pull the pump to mod it further, I'll post up new results. Suffice to say, Tom more than proved his worth with this quick retune. Can't wait to see the final results!!

Edit: 06-19-2013
Here's tonight's run with 3 half-turns of preload vs the previous dyno I posted up with zero preload. NO ADDITIONAL TUNING WAS DONE, THIS IS ON THE EXACT SAME TUNE, JUST WITH ADDED PRELOAD!

Attachment 333919

It made 8-9 psi more at 3900 RPM (19 psi at 3900 RPM with zero preload, 28 psi at 3900 RPM with 3 half turns) :lol: {thumbup}

So who still thinks the EF2.5 spools lazily? Look at that difference in torque/spool...

Zero preload @ 4078 RPM = 266 wtq
3 half turns of preload @ 4078 RPM = 326 wtq

I will test 4-6 half turns of preload and see if I can get it to spool even faster (within safety margins, of course.) But these results are even better than I expected considering 3 half turns is very light preload!

Also, just for ****s and giggles, here is my EF2.5 as of right now vs. my Evo 8 10.5 stock turbo via Virtual Dyno, done on the same road, same time of night:

Please post your previous dyno charts for now, otherwise I will have to move this thread since this section is for results.

^^Dyno added.

interested to see its output

whats the spool time on this turbo?

From what I was told/have estimated, I believe it is only 50-100~ rpm slower spool than an EF2. So maybe 200-300RPM slower spool than a stock Evo 9 turbo at most depending on your setup? :) Guess we'll find out. If it's at most 400 RPM slower spool, that is more than acceptable to me.

I am thinking that you will only notice the slower spool at 2500-3000 RPM. Once you hit 3500-4000 RPM, you should be making same/more torque and rapidly building over stock, not to mention big horsepower gains in the mid-range/top end. This is all my opinion/thoughts, but from what I've seen of Evo 8/9's with EF2's and EF3's, I'm thinking in my instance I will gain in the range of 100-150 whp from 4500-8000 RPM, which makes a HUGE difference.

If the mid-range and top end goes up that much and spool is only slightly slower than stock, this turbo will kick major ass. Can't wait.

For an example of pump gas results (93), check out this thread:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...rformance.html

Yes, they're virtual dynos, but I don't believe VD's should be dismissed. Based on the spool I'm seeing on both graphs, the EF2 on 93 spools just as fast as most stock Evo 9 turbo setups I see, with 200+ wtq coming in right around 3000 RPM. And E85 spools even faster...

Don't mean to burst your bubble but Dont you think 500WHP is a rather lofty estimate especially comparing what your cars old output was with the 10.5 turbo?
Wouldn't want you to be disappointed if you dont hit your goal, I know firsthand 500WHP isnt a cakewalk with small to medium sized stockframe turbos.

EDIT when exactly will you be testing this turbo out?

EDIT when exactly will you be testing this turbo out?

1. My tuner for the original tune is not the greatest, just really good at scamming people out of money
2. He claimed my 9 BOV and stock intake were holding me back, so I remedied those two issues
3. With an Evo 9 turbo I probably would've made a solid 15-20 whp more at peak... remember, even the 8 10.5 is down on power vs the 9 stocker.

I may not hit 500 whp on a similar dynojet, but I shouldn't be too far off. The EF2.5 is a huge upgrade over an 8 10.5.

I am shipping out a stock Evo 9 turbo on Monday, and depending on when MAP gets it, I hope to have the EF2.5 in my hands in a week or two. Optimally I'd hope that I'm about 2-3 weeks away from bolting it on and retuning on it.

Well good luck on your goals, Hopefully this new rendition finds another sweet spot in the market.

very interested in this turbo. what is the cost from MAP going to be?

$14xx for group buy price, $855 for group buy upgrade. Regularly $1680 non-group buy. These are off the top of my head.

The upgrade price especially is pretty fantastic, that's one of the reasons I hopped on it.

Nelson999 Jan 18, 2013 01:47 PM

damn thats a good price. when are they doing the $14xx group buy? i might like to get in on that

car_guy507 Jan 18, 2013 01:58 PM

I could see the EF2.5 hitting 500 whp on a dynojet on E85 with an aggressive tune with those cams.

I did 415 on a mustang which is on maps dyno about 464whp with an EF2 and similar (mild) cams

good luck!

We shall see, my friend.

DisgustipatedM3 Feb 2, 2013 03:15 AM

Update: After some delays, I finally got a chance to send in a stock Evo 9 turbo to MAP today.

I also got a free Tactrix cable so I'm going to start datalogging and virtual dyno'ing the current setup. I have incredible roads for pulls next to my house so we'll see some accurate back to back VD comparisons once the new turbo is bolted on and tuning begins.

Also, I have decided to go with the remote tuner known as 'Hollywood X' to do the tune for the EF2.5. He tunes the president of MAP's personal car and also my friend's 500+ whp Evo X. He comes highly recommended. Can't wait to see what results he pulls out of the EF2.5 on E85. :)
