Thats why they were not mentioned above. I would take a trip to Circuit City and Tweeter to listen to them first. I would not go coaxial in the front because the car comes with components. And Alpine speakers are ok but the 3 companies mentioned above get the job done better.

When installing an aftermarker component system, no additional power is required to run the tweeters? (i.e. an amp) Sorry for the "newbie" type question, just not terribly familiar with component systems.

I like the sound of the Sony Explodes. I put them in my wifes prizm with the speakers in the doors and it sounds great. Cheap too I think I spent less than $100 at circuit city for them.

Well you might want to use one to give your speakers the juice they need to perform well, just like your car needs 91octane not 87...

apparently my post was ignored by all. like i stated before, it is not recommended to run an aftermarket component system without an external amp. i never said it couldn't be done, but once you got to push the volume, it sounds like crap. take it from me. i've built numerous high end audio systems for my customers.

and i'm not going to get into a brand war with this brand X is better than brand Y stuff. i can only reccommend based on what i know and i've installed many different brands all the way from low end sonys to high end focals.

If you want to run it off your stock deck then I would look into Infinity reference speakers.

I also going to only be running a head unit, I believe it is 17 RMS and 52 peak. Is it even worth getting new speakers? I was thinking about getting some 6.5" Infinity Reference 2-way speakers for the front and rear, would it be worth it or should I just stick with the stockers? I am not expecting booming lows and mids and perfect highs, but just something a little better than stock.

So, is it worth it?

Thanks for any opinions!

Why would you buy a 3 way? What are you going to do with the 4 inch? Yes, that amp will have enough power.

Depends on the price you get them for. The reference line is an entry level speaker. Then again, from what you already have, and what you are expecting, they should be a decent match. Listen before you buy though!

Im planning to do the same thing on just replacing the oem speakers. My friend told me (he is an IASCA member) if im planning to change my speakers and not adding an amp, he said dont do it. If I want to save money, he said just leave the oem speakers and get a 4ch JL amp to power up the oem speakers. I really dont get it.

Your post was not completely ignored as the information you listed is 100% valid. Through my experience and exposure to just about everything out there, I made a suggestion to him with a few things in mind. Best bang and good sound for the buck while still maintaining some level of expandability. He will have a cleaner and easily perceptable increase in sound quality until he begins to push the speaker too much with the headunit. Suppose he does buy coaxials and than decides to amp them later on anyway. He would probably start kicking himself for not buying the entry level components.

Once you power your OEM's with a 4 ch amp, you are easily able to supply power that they want but you are also able to remove frequencies which cause them to distort via the built in crossovers in the amp. Not to mention the amp is far more efficient than your factory headunit. It makes sense if you're not one of those guys who loves loud and distorted beyond recognition noise.

Never thought about just getting an amp for the stockers.

Maybe get a decent 4 channel amp (40Wx4 or 60Wx4), put it under the passenger seat, and then intercept the speaker wire from the head unit and run it to the amp. Would end up probably being cheaper than getting new speakers for the front and rear.

Any opinions on a setup like this?

Im not giving anymore opinions. But i'll tell you what i would do if i did not want to shell out a ton of money. ($1k or less).A decent 5-channel amp (kicker or mtx or jl e/a -series 6 channel) because they are cost effective. MBQ components up front and coaxials in rear.(I like european speakers. ) A 10" sub.(JL because they dont take a ton of power to sound good.) And some GOOD wiring (RCA's have to be good. I dont skimp on these). If money is left over, a cap for the hell of it. So, good luck!

This of course sounds like a killer system, but it's a little more than I want to do. I'll definitely keep in mind some of the components you mentioned though. It's not that I don't have the money to spend on a nice system, but I would rather spend some of that money on performance parts.

I actually already have a subwoofer in the back, I went with one of the 8" 200 watt bazookas, which the audiophiles here probably think is a POS, but it is light weight and doesn't take up much room. I also like the fact that I can have it out of the trunk in a matter of seconds. It won't win any SPL awards, but it's good enough for me.
