Advise: Picking Speakers
Now for the original question, it all comes down to budget. What I would do is get a sub. You can't get bass response from a 6.5" speaker in the door, stock or aftermarket. You need an amp, so get a 4 channel amp with built in variable xovers. Connect 2 channels bridged mono to the sub(s) and use the other 2 channels to power the stock front speakers. The crossover should be used to filter out the low frequencies that made the stock speakers sound like crap in the first place. THe frotns will most likely be louder than any aftermarket speakers you could buy and will sound much better onloy doing the nob they are best suited for. The sub will provide all the low end needed and you will have a reliable, inexpensive, full frequency system. Keep the rear speakers powered off the head unit and maintain fader control. They are pretty irrelevant after the sub is installed.
I like your style. I actually set up a customers STi that way. 4-channel powering front speakers and 1 sub. Rear speakers powered by the deck. He was on somewhat of a budjet and thats what he had to work with. Did sound pretty damn good by the way. An also, thankyou for the semi-technical brakedown of the THD. Peolpe take those numbers to heart for some reason. And last but certainly not least, tube amps own all.
I hate you guys that brought up Focal. I went to audition the $200 Access 2 way 6.5" today, and they are freaking awesome! I totally want four of them now.
But $400 for four speakers is a little pricey for just running deck power off my Alpine 9856. Still, they are so clean. They absolutely annhiliated the JLs, Diamonds, Eclipse, Infinity, and Kicker speakers when listening side by side.
The MTX ones there were actually sounding nice for half the price, and had very nice bass. I'm sure their mouting depth is too deep, but nothing I heard can touch those Focals.

Since the Evo is a sedan and will not give much cabin gain I would use a single 10". Sealed is the most practical since the box will be smaller, accurate and easier to build. Ported will increase output and power handling but can damage the sub if not properly designed.
