alpine, pioneer ipod question
Ive heard that the best interface for ipod would be the alpine....but i wanted to know how much worst is the pioneer...the reason i ask is becasue i really would like the DEH-P7800MP but if the ipod functionality is bad i would just get an alpine. thanks
The Alpine has a really good search/navigation feature for looking through alot of MP3's. I have a Alpine CDA-9857 and like it alot.
Waiting for the Alpine KCA-620M USB Adapter

to come out so that I can connect any usb flash thumb drive or external usb hard drive to it instead of spending more on an ipod when all I need is the storage and not the interface.

a while ago i was messing with a pioneer with ipod....it was soo slow and it wouldnt even display titles....main reason i like the pionner is becasue of the color display...they should of had color displays 10 years ago.

im using the Pioneer DEH-P6800MP with the ipod control unit and the only bad thing about it is scrolling through a list. the scrolling doesn't accelerate the more you spin it like it does on an ipod. instead, it will advance with a sort of 1:1 feel. 1 click of the wheel will advance the list by 1. to get around this i decided to change the genres of my whole library so that the genre would be the first letter of the artist. So now when i browse by genre i get
browse by genre-->
A-->asia
B-->beatles
C-->circa...
...
i dont really care for tagging the correct genres for my music because that would be too hard anyways.

i just switched from the pioneer 6800 to the alpine 9857
in comparison to the alpine, the pioneer is not so good.
bad about pioneer.
scrolling is slow, if you scroll quickly sometimes the it takes a few seconds for the text to appear
You can only scroll one line at a time. no speed search function.
good parts about pioneer.
Its performance is ok.
when making a selection if you change your mind before you select a song, you can navigate backwards.
Alpine good stuff
Scrolling is fast. there are ways to jump to different points quikly.
bad stuff for alpine
You can't navigate backwards.
The pioneer is acceptable, but once you've used the alpine, the pioneer seems much more basic where as the alpine is much better.
This is all in regards to the ipod interface only

I was thinking more about this and maybe I will just stick an ipod in the car for now hooked right into my Alpine 9857. Which do you think would be better for the car environment in regards to temperatures and song access speed?
8GB flash based ipod nano, or a 30GB hard drive based ipod?

The 2006 model pioneers (deh-px800) are WAY better than the previous units, provided you have the updated Pioneer ipod adapber, CD-IB100II. The earlier models prior to the 800 series/CD-IB100II were pretty crappy, as the navigation was very slow and the title display was horrible (the older CD-IB100 was solely designed with the AVH-P5700 flip out unit in mind, but it "worked" with the standard decks as well). The newer units have corrected this issue, and while the Alpine units are still faster in terms of navigation, the Pioneers overall are better quality units. The navigation is almost as quick as the Alpines, in that the list will scroll as fast as you can turn the knob, however the list might not populate until a second after you stop scrolling. But, when skipping tracks in shuffle, for instance, the title information appears immediately. DEH-P880prs FTW!
