Tomtom and Garmin seem to share very similar technology/engineering. This is part of the reason Tomtom filed a law suit over in Europe against Garmin. I believe the case was dismissed though. Both companies are excellent but Garmins have more weight here in the US.

My dad has a Garmin C550 that works flawlessly for him. Not only is the nav spot on, but, the bluetooth works great as well.
Just my $0.02

Garmin is def the best. I tried the Magellen 3050T through crutchfield and didn;t like it. Horrible battery life. I ended up getting the Garmin C550 and haven't looked back.

The TomTom 910 is also damn nice it has a 20gig built in hard drive and a decent battery. It also gets great reviews overalll.

The Garmin Nuvi line is also nice, but I'ld still go with the c550 over their nuvi line up.

I work at Circuit City and the Garmin line is clearly the best, in my opinion. I have been working with all of the units for the past couple years and Garmin has proved it-self time and time again. Easy to use and does not freeze as much as the others.

garmin (and others) and tomtom (and mio) use diff map sources; navteq and teleatlas respectively.
navteq is supposedly better. i just purchased averatec 350 for $280. read some reviews and get back to us with your results.

I recently got a Nuvi 660. I don't know how I drove without it. I got a clip online that mounts it to the dash, in front of the clock.

I have used, Magellan and Garmin, both were nice, but the garmin was smaller so I tended to use that one more often...
