Roof mounted flip down DVD player in an IX ?
Roof mounted flip down DVD player in an IX ?
Has anyone installed one of these. I have a 3 year old and these things are priceless for the long car rides.
I've searched but can't find anything relevant.
I'm assuming it will replace the rear dome light, I'm cuious about how easily it attaches to the roof (is there a cross beam there) etc.
I figured if someones done it it would save me the effort of taking the dome apart before I brought the flip down unit.
Any othe input welcome.
Thanks

I am not sure why you want to do a lot of work or pay someone to do a lot of work when you can just buy a cheap seat-back harness unit (harness included) and be done with it. Your toddler is not going to care about the quality and when the toddler is not in the car, you can remove the unit just by undoing some straps.

I did a rear seat TV for a buddies EVO and we used a mount off of the seat that was removable. He didnt want to drill into the roof supports and I dont blame him. I'd have to pull the headliner to see if the support up top is in a good spot to mount one. It's doable, just prob not ideal for most people.

No I do not.
This weekend if I have time I'll pop the rear dome light out and see what's behind it. It seems most of the decent integrated kits are designed to replace the rear dome light and take it's power supply for the display, DVD and integrated dome lights. I'll probably need to up the fuse, but that's cool.
I don't see any reason why you could not do it. I will have to look, but depending on what size and weight screen you purchase you might have to think about a sagging headliner. Most of the time we will put a board up there to hold the overhead and reduce sagging.
Sagging would not be acceptable.
I assumed there would be a 'beam' of some sort that it would attach too. At least that's what every other install instructions for none evo's I've found say.
Really I was just curious if such a thing was there?
I'll have a dig around and report back.

I would say to have someone do a fiberglass enclosure off the back of your center console if you want a OEM look. You could always cover it with the same suede as the stock seats / arm rest.

When I mounted these I would use 'bendable plywood and T nuts. Cut the plywood a litle large than the metal mounting plate that comes with the monitor. Drill the mounting holes in the plywood and then insert some threaded T-Nuts. Use some Norton 2 part epoxy (i used the 15 minute stuff so i could make sure it was positioned right. Epoxy the back side of hte plywood and bond it to the roof. Thread the bolts into the T-nuts an but some paint on the heads. Put the headliner back in position and press against the heads to make a mark. Cut the headliner where the bolt marks are. Put the headliner back in and bolt up the monitor. Make sure to fix the wires to the roof or they will rattle, Dynamat or equivalent works great. I would also get some SEM plastic dye to match the interior and color the housing so it doesn't look getto.
