JL Speakers

Hey guys. I have let the audio portion of my car fall and am not very savy when it comes to speakers. The guy at the local audio shop says i would like the JL XR650's. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these or something along the same price line and level of performance?

I have them. They've been great for me. They fit well in the Evo too. Speaker sound is so subjective that it's probably pointless for me to try and describe how they sound.

I have the ZR series and they are sweet. I've always liked JL and they have a very good reputation. But like anything else with cars, it's all subjective. See if your shop will let you demo some speakers in your car so you can see what they sound like to you. Usually they can set up portable boxes...

Yeahhhhhhh, the little shop here in Sierra Vista, AZ sucks @$$. They don't have any on hand. I have heard the Focals before and they sounded really nice, but have never heard the JL's. The ZR's (if i am correct) are like $800, way to much for my appreciation level. But i was thinking of going up to Tucson and seeing if the shops up there have some displays.

Yes the ZR's are pricey but when you know people...you get them at cost. I'm sure you'll enjoy the XR's just as much.

he's looking at component speakers not subs

The Focal's are a good unit too. Don't let the salesperson try to sway you. How good a speaker sound is VERY subjective and you will only know how it sounds to you when it's in your car. Press for a demo. If they decline take your buisness elsewhere.

can't go wrong with jl audio. i'd also recommend mb quart's and boston acoustics for the seperates. but the key is matching the speakers with the amp. don't go cheap on the amp. the jl amp works excellent

I had JL XR650 in my RS and it does not fit w/o a larger baffle. Our hole are 6.75" not 6.5". I made a homemade baffle. Quality wise, JL's are excellent. Clean and fluid but not much imaging. It lacked that "live" presentation.

Now, for my IX, I picked up Focal polyglass. I heard both Focal K2P vs. JL ZR and it was no comparison! Focal's midrange was exceptionally bright w/ minute details. ZR sounded dull in comparison. I think the focals will deliver that presence that I'm seeking. I'm in the process of install and let you know...gl
