Question about amp after installation.

Okay, so I've installed my speakers and my amp and wired everything up. After testing the setup, everything sounded fine, however, my amp continuously shuts off by itself when I turn up the volume past a certain level or attempt to increase the bass. I've noticed the amp gets hot real quick and thought this might have something to do with it, but when the volume is at a low level and I increase it incrementally the amp will handle it with no problems. Do you guys have any idea what could be causing my amp to shut off by itself and what I can do to rectify the problem? Any help will be appreciated.

Oh, and in case you're wondering I'm running Rockford Fosgate speakers all around and I have a Rockford Fosgate Amp.

What is all of your stuff rated at? All I can think of is that the amp is trying to push more that it can handle

Sub amp or 4 channel amp. If its a 4 channel amp you are using to run your speakers, try disconnecting speakers one by one from the amp. Disconnect one and turn it up until it cuts out, if it cuts out again, disconnect another one. If once you have disconnected a speaker and the problem stops, the problem is with that speaker. It is either blown or grounding out. If its a sub amp, most likely the ohm load the subs are does not match up with the amp.

problem is the load
you need to find out what the subs/speakers are rated at and make sure the amp can power it
most amps wont run 1 ohm load, and will opwer off and overheat quickly because of hte high current.

I checked my manuals and it says the amp can handle a minimum of 2 ohms per speaker; both of my front and rear sets are rated at 4 ohms. I checked my amp tonight and it is not running hot, but I noticed that my "protect" light keeps coming on. According to the manual this means that I might have short, or, as another poster mentioned, I have a blown speaker. The good news is I checked all of my speakers and they appear to be getting sound, so I'm thinking it might be that not enough juice is getting to the amp. I'll have to buy an multimeter to test it and make sure that is the case.

Like I said, sounds like a speaker is grounding out. Could be the power is getting too low at the amp, but if you ran it from the battery, its not likely. Try the method i posted above, disconnecting a speaker, and then turning it up to see if it clips again. Do this until it works and then you will know what speaker is the culprit. Good luck!

I did that and found that both fronts were not working properly because they were wired poorly. I rewired them and made the wiring a little cleaner both at the crossovers and at the amp. This solved the problem somewhat:when the amp has no gain adjusted, the system works great, but when I start adjusting the gain the power just cuts out. When I say cuts out, I mean the system just shuts off and does not even go into protect mode. I didn't get a chance to play around with it more because the car was towed away, but it sounds as if the system is not getting enough power. I'll just have to wait to do more testing when I get my car back.

Where did you get power from the amp at? Yea, if the light on the amp is going out completely, definitely do like you said and test power at the amp while it shuts off. Do this for the remote wire also.

if you over "excurt" a speaker it will show protect on the amplifier. Also, what are your setting on the amp, and on your deck.

like said before, what i would do, is remove one speaker at a time, and play the system, this will isolate any speaker issues.

When the gain on both the front and rear speakers is set to the lowest setting and the Khz is set to its lowest level, I can turn the sound all the way up and not produce any issues, so the speakers are no longer an issue. However, when I start adding in gain or khz, that's when the system just shuts off. Like I said before, I can't do anything about it now since the car is on a rack some 40 miles away so I'll give you guys an update after I get my car back.

Okay, so I figured it out. Power to the amp was too low so I had to switch from a 10 gauge wire to a 4 gauge wire. This was my first amp install so when the Best Buy rep who sold me the amp gave me a 10 gauge wire I just bought it. Well, now that I'm a little wiser about wiring I'll be asking a little more questions instead of just making an outright purchase.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and input.
