Recommendation of sound system parts?
I am looking for a recommendation of a headunit somewhere between 100-275 or so. I will be playing a lot of hard rock and metal here and there and dont like A LOT of bass. So would I possibly jsut need an amp or would I need to get subwoofers? Asking you guys because Im not sure what system sounds like what with different types of music. I work at best buy so anything you guys could recommend from there would be great.
What you're looking for is a good set of components hooked up to an amp. Since you're into heavy metal, highs and mids are probably most important to you. Good thing you work at bestbuy you can get a hookup and a system and labor. How much of a discount do they give employees on car audio?
For headunits, I've always been an alpine guy. Best sound quality for the price imo. You can test out what bestbuy has to offer by taking a favorite cd of yours and seeing which speakers you like the best. Every car audio guy will tell you that each person has their own specific tastes so "there is no best speaker"

i've got a set of dual type-r 12s, a monoblock amp, 4 channel amp, and a capacitor, with a kenwood head unit. i listen to a lot of dance, techno, and bass-heavy music usually. i can rattle the windows of cars next to me. 3 lanes over, haha.
best thing to do is get some quality stock replacement speakers, a good matching head unit, and possibly an amp (depending how many watts you want).
my setup is 1200+ watts but i'm rarely at more than 25% of it's capability. make sure you listen to different setups to get what you want.

I would recommend to go with Alpine head unit. Do not even look at sony or kenwood cr@p. Alpine is most decent piece of equipment that bestbuy has. Defenatly look for stock speakers replacement, speaker wise I would recommend to go to the ebay since they got speaker around 50% off comparing to BB prices. And if you want to go little crazy than look at amplifiers. Pretty much any amp will do better job than stock amp in the head unit. In case you have any questions feel free to PM me, I have been working on the car audio for a little while so I can help you with a decent setup.
I'd get it from BB there locally, since if there's any issues, it's in-store and easy to take care of.

Sorry man, but we can't tell you what you will like. Gotta find out for yourself by listening to the stuff. Spend some time listening to everything with some music you are familiar with. You'll then be able to find speakers that sound the way you like.
As for subs, don't start there. Get a new head unit first with stock speakers. Then add new speakers if you don't like the way the stockers sound. If you still don't like the sound, then add an amp to those new speakers. Also consider putting dynamat on your doors...helps tremendously. Then, if all that isn't enough, look into adding a sub.
Good luck.

I work at BBY so I know exactly what you need.
Headunit-- either the alpine 9881 or 9883 both good specs, but the 83 gives more voltage to your amp if you get one.
Pioneer-- get the 4900i best one IMO.
Speakers-- Fronts-- Component infinity if you get a 4ch. amp ....... If you go without a amp get the 2-way version of those.
Rears-- 6x9 infinitys or if you want more bass get the pioneer 1672 model
4 channel amp-- get the alpine 70Wx4 amp... very underated.
also get the dual twist $40 RCA's it improves your sound quality instead of the ones that come in the amp kit.
Buy a power kit for the amp.... not the entire kit as stated above.
****** Sparknotes Version *******
Buy a headunits +4 speakers if you want an okay sound
Add on a 4 channel amp with dual twisted RCA's for a kickass sound
P.s. the discount is a lot more than 45% at least on cables, and wiring kits.

he's pretty much got it summed up, only the Evo has 6.5 all around, so defiantly don't skimp on the speakers because they're what make the biggest difference in sound for your car
I worked at Circuit City and I've done all the audio stuff in my cars myself. Honestly though save up and get quality pieces because you can't spend little and expect alot with car audio.

so basically before buying some subs and a box, we should replace stock speakers too?? What if we have the SSL with the infinity sound, sub and amp already in the car.......replace all that too?? it sounds good i just want a little thump with my music is all
Got an Alpine 9885 head unit having it installed tomorrow and will let you know how it sounds. Everywhere i have searched on this forum, feedback has been the same "go with Alpine". I am interested in the bluetooth, sirius and IPod features then I will go for the speakers etc.
