New head unit, lost bass, did i miss something?

So I just installed a pretty nice alpine head unit in my evo and the overall sound quality is tad better (wasnt expencting much, just wanted to be able to play mp3 dics and the iPOD jack).

But i lost alot of bass. Of course i tried messing with the alpine but even with the bass all the way up it didnt sound as good as the stock unit..

Did I miss a connection? The only 2 connections there were was one for the antennae and the main harness connection. Is there a stock sub or something that i dont know about? Theres 4 connections on the back of the stock head unit but i only remember just the 2 being used....

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

do you have a car with the SSL package ? if so, there is a sub... but its noticeable, because its in the trunk

otherwise, you may have the crossover on your deck set up incorrectly or you have it set up as if you are running a sub when you arent

thanks for the quick reply, nah no ssl here

So youd be pretty confident its just something in the settings? Is there anything in the wiring i couldve messed up? It was pretty straight forward all the wires were color matched perfectly(i did check them all though on the manual to be sure)

im pretty sure within the alpine deck settings you need to crank the subwoofer level to the max to achieve the 4 volt preouts they claim.

I just had the alpine 9885 installed. When i bought the unit from crutchfield i was told that i would lose the base. When i took it to the shop to have it installed they used a different harness that allowed me to use the sub. I just cannot adjust it until i install a seperate amp since it is currently running off the stock amp. I have been amazed at the difference in sound. Hope this helps.

Yeah, its your settings for sure. When I got mine installed on the Evo forever ago I was getting a sub the next weekend so they set it up for aftermarket amps. I had speakers, the speaker amp, and the headunit. I lost a TON of bass. But it was just the settings.

Also had a friend get one installed and they made it so he couldn't turn his bass up too high (by changing other settings to have lower bass) so he didn't blow his speakers

Dunno what HPF or anything else really is other than the EQ settings. I let the shop do all the work on all my audio equipment and the setup. Good times with that stereo system...

I have the same deck. I believe the HPF is the High Pass Filter.

^^ You are correct. I think that means that it was only allowing high sounds through and no lows.

HPF is high pass filter... which loses all your tones lower than a certain setting, say 120 hz or something

alright so why is that a bad thing? Do you only use it when you have 'real' system or something?

It's used when the head unit powers speakers to which you don't want low frequency sounds going. Typically this might be used in a setup with interior speakers that can't handle those low frequencies. You would connect the line out of the head unit to an alternative amplifier and that could power a sub to handle those lower frequencies for the system.

Check your wiring, if you reversed (+,-) on one of the speakers, the bass frequency from the pair of speakers will "cancel" eachother out.

hpf keeps your tweeters from blowing by playing low bass notes, & lpf keeps your sub from playing high frequencies. if u are still using the stock speakers then u have very little bass anyway. a nice 8"sub in a sealed box w/a mono amp would round out your system nicely...

I love the sound of my SSL stereo system with the new Pioneer HU. It definitely woke up my bass and I actually have to turn down my bass at times because it can be overwhelming.
