Question Good Mobile GPS?

I did a few searches and didnt come up with anything. I am looking to put a GPS unit into the Evo and I was at Best Buy looking at a bunch today. I know nothing about which would be a good buy. They seemed to have a good Tom Tom for like 180 bucks. What should I be looking for? Anyone have one in their car and want to recommend one?

My mom has a Garmin (not exactly sure which model) but it was around $200 and it has saved my life a few times being lost in the middle of nowhere in northern California. I'd recommend a Garmin unit.

Do you think a 200 model is just as good as the 400? I really dont need all the bluetooth crap right now. I do alot of cross country driving and I am the fail at directions so this thing would be a great investment for me. Thanks for the input so far hope to read some more reviews.

I actually work at best buy. I'll try to help you out. Only buy a Garmin, Magellen or Tom Tom for starters. Do you want text to speech meaning, do you want it to say street names or just turn left turn right.

Tom Tom
Free updates for lifetime, Priced cheaper, good online updates and customer service. the first model that says street names is TT ONE-XLS the last S is for tect to speech.

Garmin- Best software, most expensive, updates are expensive. Easy to get replacement parts. Again cost the most. US Company. Garmin 260 is first unit with street names (Text to Speech)

Magellen. Best Bang for the buck. Great software, easiest to use, finds the best points of interest search (food, gas, entertainment.) I can't remember the model number exactly but I think the 3150 is the first with text to speech.

Key features Text to Speech, Update cost, Screen Size. All the other are fancy options, Bluetooth, MP3, Traffic updates. Hope that helps.

i had a tom tom one and loved it. i've read many reviews that say the tom tom is the way to go if you want a basic nav unit. list most people have said, it depends on what features you want. the TT one doesn't have text to speech but that never really bothered me. no matter which one you get, make sure you update as soon as you get home though.

Thanks SGEvo for the run down! I am looking at the Tom Tom for real now. I will prolly pick up it tomorrow or later this week. I guess I dont need street names, as long as it says it in text on the screen. I have good eyes lol. Now I just have to figure out where to mount it. I am thinking in the left hand corner of the windshield.

There are times when you shouldn't be looking at the screen. Then having it say street names can be very handy. 'Turn here' may put you down a blind alley.

Some of the cheaper machines come with regional maps only - I guess they have less installed memory.

So, I'd suggest you get the cheapest machine that has text to speech and a map of the entire US.
