new system - angry, and confused

I just installed a Kicker 10L7 in Kicker made ported box(06ts10L72) with blaupunkt 500 watt amp and capacitor. I am having very annoying sound issues. The sub pounds with the trunk open but not when closed. You can barely tell there is even a sub back in there when the trunk is closed and it's even worse when driving. I've messed with all the settings on the alpine head unit and the amp and I know it's hooked up correctly because like I said - it pounds with the trunk open. I have never experienced anything like this before. I had about five different people trying to figure this one out and no one could come up with anything. I do have all of my trunk lining out but I don't know if that should make that big of a difference. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose sleep over this one. Has anyone dealt with this before? Is it the car accoustics? HELP!

I dont know if this could be it but is the polarity reversed? If thats not it you could try removing your rear speakers and just run with your front separates. Thats what i did.

I know for a fact that the speaker wire from the amp to the sub is correct. I also tried switching the rca's back and forth but it didn't make any difference. I also tried switching the speaker wire back and forth also. One weird thing that I noticed is that when I put my car cover back in the trunk, the sound got a little bit better - a little bit. I had my friend sit in the passenger seat with the trunk closed and then I just hit the button for the trunk and it was by far better and then when I opened the trunk it sounded amazing. I'm really leaning towards buying some dynamat but I don't want to spend the money if it isn't going to do ****.

I would reverse your polarity on your sub. Wiring speakers positive/negative "correctly" isn't necessarily always correct.

I'm assuming the woofer and port are facing the rear? If they're not, they need to be.

Just realized you said you swapped your speaker wires. . .

How is your box oriented in your trunk?

Dynamat won't help this.

The sub/box combo comes pre-built and pre-wired internally from Kicker. It's a "truck style" box so it's long length and skinny depth so the port is actually firing out of the side and the sub is facing the rear of the car. I tried switching positions of the box - when I had the sub facing the front of the car it was even worse.

Try stuffing/blocking the port and see if that helps.

In all of my stereo experiences in previous cars it has always been the opposite of what is happening to me. Usually when your in the car and you pop your trunk the bass goes away. I started to put anything I could find in my trunk to catch the sound waves and it seemed like it got a little bit better. I'm no sound engineer or anything close to that but it kind of seems like if I had something to catch or reflect the sound of my completely bare metal trunk that it would help. I honestly don't know, I might just be talking out my ****.

I'm deffinitely going to try blocking the port tomorrow. I was wondering if it had something to do with that but I figured Kicker sells the f'n $400 box like this, they know what the hell they're doning.

I doubt the rear speakers will make a difference. Your getting cancellation of some sort due to reflection which is why you open your trunk it gets louder. Your getting rid of a wall for the wave to reflect off of. My guess is either plugging the port will help or you may try moving the box farther towards the rear of the car.

You can also try a PPI phase shift thingy. I believe the model number is psc-221 or something like that. They're kinda hard to find, but you can actually adjust the phase instead of just switching polarities. You should be able to get one for around $100.

The port firing to the side should be the issue, This type of box is a angle mount truck box. The box should be place on the left or right side, depending on
if you have the left or right side box. The woofer should be firing left to right, with the port facing the back of the car.

Since the port is out of the side of the box... face the speaker to the side of the car and point the port towards the trunk lid, with it as close to the seat back as possible.

EDIT: you beat me ^^^

Can anyone explain what the difference between a port firing to the side/woofer to the rear and woofer firing to the side/port to the rear is?

Thanks.
