instead of limited ourselves with 6.5" subs for the rear deck, you could do this.

yes baffles holding up 8's running IB!

not even sure if a 12w1 is designed at all for free air or infinite baffle
Not a bad idea for a little bump without adding the weight of an enclosure. As long as the front is completely sealed off from the back (which it looks to be), these should perform well and produce some punchy (but not deep) bass kick.
You wouldn't happen to know what subs they are?

I know that back in the day kicker made some "freeair" subs that were meant for such an application. I havent really checked out that line in some time, so I really dont know if they offer anything like that anymore.

dont do it, it sounds like garbage!!! i have a friend that tried this with horrid results.
on 10 inch critical mass (spelling) sub in the center of the rear deck and it sounded like sheeeee t.
like awful.
that is probably one of the least ideal areas to put a subwoofer in a car, but if you want to take advantage of that space then i would opt for the 6.5 inch free air route but its still going to sound awful. even if its sealed. its firing straight up......
sound waves travel from up and down THEN side to side. so this make the rear deck a **** poor location.

Done with the proper sub (i.e., one made for free-air or an infinite baffle setup) would work well. I say work well in that it would add a decent amount of MUSICAL low end to a nice system. Also, a small enclosure could be made from fiberglass and it would work well. If you're looking for just "bumps in da trunk", don't do this type of setup.
I've actually been thinking about it as Focal makes a 5" sub.... again, not looking to move my organs around, just a nice low end fill.
I'll post results if I actually end up doing it.
