First and foremost, how much do you want to spend on it? What music do you listen to?

my suggestion is for you to audition in-car audio systems or even the components separately. some good audio shops have test boxes/demo areas for the car audio products that they carry. audio is subjective and what may be good for me may not work out for you. if you really want the best components and you're set to spend on your system, you can expect to spend more than 1000. some brands, to name a few, that you can look into are clarion, alpine, nakamichi, mcintosh, denon for head units; focal, morel, hertz, dls, dyns, ID, JL, Fi for component speakers/separates/subs; sinfoni, butler, genesis, audison, dls, JL for amps. i'm sure there's a lot more, though. auditioning will help you narrow down your choices for sure.
hth.

Noone here will be able to tell YOU what is best for YOU. My buddy loves the sound of Alpine components...I hate them...they sound harsh to me. Another friend of mine loves JL components...again, I hate them....they sound unnatural and boomy. For me, I prefer the sound of a good Focal component and my preference for subwoofers is JL Audio because I've owned a lot of brands over the past ten years and JL is the one that has always performed regardless of the situation I put it in. I may pay more for JL, but I don't mind paying given the quality and previous experiences I've had with their products. The best advice anyone can give is to tell you to take the time to go and listen in a good listening environment (not a box store like Best Buy or Circuit City....find a dedicated reputable car audio shop). Take music you are familiar with...if you listen to you iPod, take it with you. If you find a setup that is intriguing, sit and listen for at least 20 minutes so you get a good feel for the sound....5 minute demos aren't going to do anything for you. If you don't like the sound of a certain speaker, play with settings on the EQ, Amp, and/or receiver and see if you like it more after adjustment...if you don't, no big deal....switch up the setup you are trying out. I learned the hard way...I built at least 5 systems before I got my Evo. I got the Evo and decided I know what I want, but I'm not going to skimp like i have in the past....as a result, I have the system I've always wanted (albeit, the receiver was changed out a few months back for a newer Alpine unit which is not coming out until the car dies or the stereo dies...whichever happens first)

I agree it depends on your ear and how you enjoy your music. I have MB Quart Q's and there a little tinny for me. I have been threw so many systems and i change often due to the fact that i work in a audio shop and im always looking for the next best thing. For 1000 I would start off with a good headunit and work you way from there.

Check out Elemental Designs. They have great stuff, not too many people know about them. They sell everything direct so you'll save a boat load of cash without compromising quality and the they also have amazing cutomer service.

I have last years model of component speakers, 12" subs and the ED NINE.1 1200w amp from them. Do a little reasearch on them and you'll find out what I'm talking about.

well, personnaly i have diffrent brands through out my car, all my speakers, tweaters, components are infinity, my sub is alpine with alpine amp, headunit is also a flip out alpine, and all wiring is done with monster cables, i would recommend JL audio subs over my alpine because they are better quality, if you also have the money then jl audio components wont hurt, but remmember you can have all this good stuff in your car but if your headunit is bad then it will not do you any good
