Upgrading the STOCK Stereo Deck

Anyone here added a aftermarket deck/DVD ONLY with no amps or speakers?
Did it make the whole sound system better overall?

Just put in an Alpine ida-305s. 45x4 amp too. The stock speakers suck pretty much. I am going to put in some type s components to help out.

Switching the stock deck with an aftermarket is fine. You just cant get the best from the new deck without the sub/amp etc.

A good aftermarket deck will have better sound than the stock evo head unit. If your car has a factory amp, you will need to bypass it for best results.

Agreed. I drove around for 3 months having just replaced the head unit and it sounded MUCH better than stock. But thats definitely just the first step in a better-sounding system.

Put in a new head unit so I could plug in my Ipod, I didn't add anything else in because I don't care that much for sound quality, but it definitely sounds better with the new head unit.

I installed a pioneer deck that definitely improved the sound quality. Highly recommended.

same here, went with an Alpine deck and it sounds so much better, biggest issue I had was finding a specific cable to hook it up, I have the SSL package and was un-informed none of the speaker wires were behind the OEM deck

aftermarket decks will put out about 15-40 watts of extra power so it will sound better. Next would be replacement speakers and amp.

For those that upgraded just the deck for better sound, did you have a factory amp? If so, did you integrate or bypass it?

A bypass is best... but if you don't its ok, but you will be running more power then the stock speakers can handle and it will also sound like crap at higher levels.

My sound quality improved by adding a deck while still using the factory amp and then again when I upgraded to an outboard amp.

Interesting that some of you recommend bypassing the factory amp. Most aftermarket decks put out about 20 watts so even though the factory amp doesnt give much, I'd imagine its still more than a deck.
