Question 6 1/2 woofers, anyone try it?

Has any one put 6 1/2 woofers in the rear deck in an infinite baffle set up? Any thoughts or ideas?

I've tried it. If you can take care of the issues presented by an IB and a non-sealed trunk, there isn't enough amplitude to overcome the car, itself.

get some Orion HCCA 12" subs and a strong enough amp if you want some bass.

nice to know it doesn't work well enough to waste time and energy with it. i don't want a ton of bass, just a bit. i'm trying to lose as little trunk space as possible, while not being too heavy.

Kicker has some 6.5" subs that handle 150 watts rms each, free air or enclosed.

2 of these would be plenty bass for your app and leaving plenty trunk space.

IMO run them enclosed instead of free air for best sound quality.

How do you know? I bet we could install these in your car, have you move at 30mph and you'll never know whether they're playing or not.

That's what i'm worried about. i had 2 6 1/2 kickers on my old civic hatchback and they were great, but the Evo is so much louder than my honda. i think the exhaust noise alone would drown them out.

Exactly. It even gets "better" than that. The noise floor is not constant relative to frequency. Amplitude rises, and that's to be expected, but the frequency component is variable. For all intents and purposes, say, you have the system tuned to sound a certain way as the car moves at 40MPH in 3rd. As soon as you go into 4th, or increase/decrease the revs, the whole sonic landscape changes due to the random concentrations/reinforcement driven by a shift in the noise floor. This can't be tuned out. What you're left with is no real bass, even though the woofers are moving.

That's is when the car is close to stock. Add an exhaust, an open-element filter, cams, bigger turbo, etc and the impact of noise floor increases exponentially. The Evo is not like any other car audio project; this car requires a very specific approach, assuming one wants improved sound quality at speed.

I know because I've ran Kicker subs for the past 7 years and I have used them from 100w rms to 800w rms. Anyone will feel 100 cleans watts rms.

Regardless of what size sub you use, your ideal frequency will be 30-70hz, which a 6.5" kicker or 12" kicker will be able to produce.

In a free air app, you're probably right, you probably won't hear it, but in a enclosed box I don't see it being drowned out by the exhaust.

Were the subs enclosed in a box?
