nice to know it doesn't work well enough to waste time and energy with it. i don't want a ton of bass, just a bit. i'm trying to lose as little trunk space as possible, while not being too heavy.
Working on the exact same concept ATM. I'll let you guys know if it works out.
you can do a suspended 4 6.5inch woofers in a sealed enclosure.

Kicker has some 6.5" subs that handle 150 watts rms each, free air or enclosed.
2 of these would be plenty bass for your app and leaving plenty trunk space.
IMO run them enclosed instead of free air for best sound quality.

How do you know? I bet we could install these in your car, have you move at 30mph and you'll never know whether they're playing or not.
That's what i'm worried about. i had 2 6 1/2 kickers on my old civic hatchback and they were great, but the Evo is so much louder than my honda. i think the exhaust noise alone would drown them out.
That's is when the car is close to stock. Add an exhaust, an open-element filter, cams, bigger turbo, etc and the impact of noise floor increases exponentially. The Evo is not like any other car audio project; this car requires a very specific approach, assuming one wants improved sound quality at speed.

Regardless of what size sub you use, your ideal frequency will be 30-70hz, which a 6.5" kicker or 12" kicker will be able to produce.
In a free air app, you're probably right, you probably won't hear it, but in a enclosed box I don't see it being drowned out by the exhaust.
