10w6 x 2 with JL 1000/1v2 - Is it overkill?
10w6 x 2 with JL 1000/1v2 - Is it overkill?
One of my friends is selling 2 x 10w6 D4 and 1000/1v2 amp for $550. I got Evo9 SSL with Alpine Double din head unit INA-910, stock speakers and Arc audio 4050xxk ready to be installed. I also have PC680 Odyssey mini battery. What I really want is to upgrade my current system to something better than stock and maybe have some flexibility if I decide to add even more sound.
1. Will this amp starve my alternator?
2. If yes will cap fix it? Or Different battery? Or Upgrade on the alternator?
3. Is this a good deal and would be worth extra effort if any to make it work?
4. What is the good location to install the amp?
5. Which box to use with these subs...
6. Would 500/1v2 still be better amp? I guess I could still get this deal and replace amp with 500/1v2.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

1. thats a LOT of current for the stock alternator. according to the total watts of the amplifiers your running, you'll be north of 1200 RMS at least.
2. cap won't do **** really with that RMS power. upgrading your alternator is always the best method.
3. it's an ok deal
4. where ever you want.... i have my amps mounted on the x-brace behind the back seats
5. get/build a box with the space requirements of your subs. don't by some crap box or build
something that's to small or to big.
6. that's to small of an amp to run those 2 subs mentioned above. will it work... yes? but they will be way under powered and cause them to clip.

Frys sells box $50 for 2 subs and its pretty heavy and have sturdy feel. Or should I look elsewhere?
I found this Website.

your better off having a local place make you a custom alternator for that price. i had autolectrics do mine a few years ago. they're located in campbell.
in terms of the $50 box. like i said..... it doesn't matter if it's expensive or cheap. you just need the specific air space to push those subs. if the box mentioned has the right dimensions then go for it.
btw Frys is hit or miss..... they got a bunch of cool stuff. they got a bunch of **** to.

my 9 has had 2 12" w6's w/ a Fosgate bd 1500 since almost new, yes the lights dim some when the volume is up high, but with the stock battery its gonna happen. ive since added a 4 channel 500W Fosgate amp w/ mids and highs and upgraded to an Optima battery... lights dont dim so much if any ...
i think your setup will sound decent, just like mentioned before, be sure the box is the right size for the speakers, makes a night and day difference.

1. Will this amp starve my alternator? Not if you don't wire the drivers for a low load.
2. If yes will cap fix it? No. Or Different battery? Or Upgrade on the alternator? Better to design an intelligent rig that won't drain the electrical system to begin with.
3. Is this a good deal Not bad. and would be worth extra effort if any to make it work? No.
4. What is the good location to install the amp? A 4050 fits under the front seat(s).
5. Which box to use with these subs... Don't use these subs. It's almost a pointless exercise in this application, unless you only care about the sound when the car is standing still, or are willing to overpower the car and deal with the drawbacks. Then, there's the ridiculous weight, given the said constraints.
6. Would 500/1v2 still be better amp? Better, how? I guess I could still get this deal and replace amp with 500/1v2.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Read this thread. It discusses some of the constraints posed by this platform:

Good luck.
