Also, what do you mean by "plug-in HID in the standard lamp location", not an Ebay HID conversion right?
What went in the hi-beam location:

The low-beam is in fact a plug and play HID upgrade (like you would get from Ebay, but a nicer product). I had BNIB Evo IX headlights and didn't want to hack up both spots in case the high-beam project didn't work out properly. All bulbs are 5K temp.

Well guys -- sorry to say, but instead of installing the FX-R 3.0 projectors on Friday I ended up just fixing my existing Morimoto Mini H1 projectors. I was having an issue with the passenger side highbeam solenoid. Basically every time I turned the lights on, the highbeam would automatically come on. I thought it was stuck up at first, but it ended up being a wiring issue. Then since I had the headlights opened up I blacked out the housings like the JDM version.

If anyone has questions about lights or taking them apart or anything like that feel free to contact me. It just would have been more trouble to go through to install those FX-Rs than fixing my Mini's.

They do fit with a little shaving of the fx projector . Have a set of 8 Hid headlamps and a spare set of Fx35 projectors so I tried to fit them in there , since I have the Oem ones i would recommend the Fxr with the 3 inch lens so theres not a gap around the projector .

How'd the install go? any pics? I wanted to go with the MD2S 3.0 like these but not a lot of online support available.

Hey man. I’m really sorry the for late reply. Install wasn’t bad. Very time consuming though. Sometime I even wondered why I was dicking with it at times haha. They were already mounted in there last year, but after I lowered my car down, the height was too low and the shrouds mounted over the projectors didn’t allow for me to raise them any higher. so i had to grind those down a bit. Also, my passenger high beam was on the fritz, so I had to dig in to fix. (That was a very simple wiring issue.) So it was just a matter of opening them up, fixing them, and adjusting them to where I needed them to be so they are not just aiming at the ground anymore. Like I said, I also painted them black (not the reflectors, just the black-chrome part to a simple semi-gloss black). I honestly don’t have the BEST pictures to show a great amount of detail, but I can post up what I have. I think they came out really nice. Again, these are the 2.5” Mini H1, not the full 3” like the FX-R 3.0, so there is a small gap. I have shrouds over the projectors too, so that helps out a lot with filling in some of the gap and gives it a nice presence inside of the black housing. May, or may not have been exactly what you were asking for, but I'm a visual guy, so I figured the pictures can serve as a reference to anyone looking at 2.5" projectors. Full 3" would be cool, but I am more than happy every time I walk up to my Evo.

The first pic is the Before close up (unpainted). You can notice the small gap but only if you looking for it, and in my opinion that means you are too close to my car. The last pic is the final product from a distance and you cannot tell there is a gap, or too much of an ugly aftermarket look.

Looking at the 2nd pic, doesnt' look like you cut anything? I went with the TSX and I'm ok with them but I definitely need to re-align the beam and adjust the Driver side projector itself. How much hacking if any did you have to do?

IIRC with the TSX projectors there's hardly any hacking you need to do, and the hacking you do need to do is on the projector housing itself (the mounting area around the projector) and not on the headlight housings

There was a little bit of hacking for mine, and for that, I do wish that went with the FX-R's from the very beginning lol. However, like what was said just above this post is that all of the hacking was done to the projector housing and not to the headlight housing. In fact, on mine we used the OEM projector housing for about half of the projector. Basically the bowl portion. I had help with that piece of the puzzle, so honestly I can’t give too much detail to that. Sorry. However I did scan through his facebook page and found some of the pictures that he posted up. Hopefully that can help a little!

FX-R's WILL NOT FIT in standard housings without cutting into the turn signal area. TSX will basically bolt right up

Wow....I guess I can't complain with my TSX's. They are easy to fit but not for a beginner when it comes to hacking! I'll have to take the headlights apart and hopefully I'll be able to re-adjust the projectors. My cutoff isn't sharp and it's a bit dull

Being that the headlights aren't a power upgrade, the online support when it comes to installation, sucks! Can't remember who I asked on here but all they told me was the bolts I would need and that was it...

Well, from what I saw (after the fact of course) is that the TSX would have been a relatively easy one to retrofit in there. You would need to cut the a small piece of (i believe the corner of the projector to fit around the turn signal area. Not bad at all. Please correct me if I'm wrong for anyone who has done the TSX) If you are looking for the best output and least amount of hassle - I would go TSX. Now, I really do like the Mini's though. Nice cut off and looks great in the evening and night. Output is awesome! But I also think that for the bit of trouble that they were, the FX-R could have been used in there instead ha.

But to answer your question, it was the stock "bowl" portion that was cut and used. The headlight housing did not have to be cut.
