two bad codes thrown... please read!!

for a few days ive been having a problem with a bad studdereing/loss of power in 3rd gear at wot above 5500 rpms. today i had the codes checked and i found this:
DTC P0335: Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit
DTC P0340: Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit
i dont know what has to do with this. any ideas on whats wrong with my car? is it all being retarded so much the sensors are being trhown off? any ideas are appreciated.

the camshaft position sensor which is located on the top right side of the head could be your problem. It sounds as if this ensor may be damaged or broke, or even oil or debrie in the oil is causing this sensor not to read. i actually broke this sensor and I was throwing the same two codes. I could not drive the car at all. The sensor costed me $52 at the dealer, and yes it is dealer only. I have no other ideas than that.

I also had the 272 cams in my car. you will need to get a new belt and . you will have to get it at the dealer.

more than likely when the installed the cams and/or cam gears they did not release the tension on the belt correctly. If you tighten down in the belt tensioner to fast it will cause it to fail over time.

Who did your install was it a local mechanic from some shop or was it a performance shop? Had they worked on EVO's before?

Like I said above:

More than likely when the mechanic installed the cams and/or cam gears he did not release the tension on the belt correctly. If you tighten down in the belt tensioner to fast it will cause it to fail over time. The belt tensioner is a hydraulic unit, and when you apply to much pressure to it to fast it will cause the fluid to go by the seals to fast and allow the piston inside the unit to scar the walls and seals. This will lead to the failure of this part.

Get in touch with Andrew at www.dyno4mance.com he can prob explain it better than I can as he has seen several of these failures come into his shop.

we did not take the timing apart when we installed the cams. we clamped the cam gears and held them up until we put them over the dowl. so, what are the characteristics of a car with the problem you describe? would it cause me to jump timing? how much is it to fix the tensioner?

Ummm... Maybe you installed the Cam Position sensor 180 degrees off.

If it is, the sensor is giving an advance reading to the ecu. You can idle but in higher rpm's, there is so much timing seen that the ecu will pull it back hence the studder your talking about.

Just a thought.
