Need your advice on intakes

I know there's a thread on intakes but your advice would be much appreciated!

I had a HKS RS Intake on my EVO for 3 weeks. The very day my friend and I installed it, my EVO started stalling once a day. So, I took it off and my car stopped stalling.

I'm thinkin of having a pro install the HKS back on for me now. Do you think it will be prone to stalling again? Could it have been because my friend and I did a crappy job installing it the first time? Can I get it tuned to solve the stalling problem? And is anybody else still having stalling problems?

I have seen the stalling issue on the HKS RS intake before

It is related to the larger diamter of the intake pipe and a slight loss in mass air flow sesnor velocity

It only happens on a few of the evos that get the RS kit - most run fine without cams

When you install the RS kit its good to get some tuning device be it flash or piggy back to re-adjust the maf calibration to dial in the a/f ratio as the RS kit can cause a very lean a/f ration though the middle of the power band

I have a new idel solution fix for cam shaft equiped cars which also would help out on a condition like you have

Don't give up on the HKS RS kit - its a great intake and makes about 9 whp more than stock - WITH the right tuning

Take the intake off and stick to stock, were not running hondas here so an inatake and tunning for it is not that beneficial. Yes, Al is right you will get power but is it worth your money to tune it for X amount of dollars.

I would put together a few more items on your ride and then tune for all of them at once. This will get you more bang for your buck, unless money for you grows on trees...

I have the HKS Suction intake and it never stalls, the only stalling issue i had on the car is when i replace the stock bov with an apexi one that didn't recirculate back into the intake. I then replaced the apexi one with one from a evo MR which is made of alumium and can hold more boost....

soo.. check to make sure there is a good connection between the bov and the intake, ps. are you running a stock bov?

You're using an x-flash that's probably not tuned for an intake. If you want to stick with an intake you should tune for it...imho

use only the filter don't bother using the pipe it's not so good for the car. I doubt that the installation process made any different. I have the K&N typhoon intake system and it didn't do me any goods so I just used the filter and it work fine ever since.

The stalling issues could be related to the hot air most of the underhood intakes suck in making the car run lean.
I have the APS which is a true cold air intake. Awesome power and sound and absolutley no hesitation or stall/ idle issues. Its a little pricey for some because you need to buy the APS intercooler water tank to go with it. Also instalation is more involved than most intakes. I have no regrets
See pics in this thread:

Another alternative might be the Apexi cold air box. It works with several different intake systems and helps keep the hot air out.

If I had a hard-on for an intake the APS is pretty sweet...

Well, I have the Injen Intake W/Upper IC piping and I love it. I know most say you lose power, but I did notice a gain, however I do plan on getting it all tuned for my mods, that is the best way to go. I think you may have had some issues if it wasnt installed properly, but its hard to say. Well good luck with whatever you chose.
