you need to pull out both splined shafts that the axles came off of. there is a 8mm 1.25 metric threaded hole in the center of both shafts. you can either attach a slide hammer to each, or bolt a few feet of a chain to the shaft and loop the other end of the chain to a big sledge hammer and swing the hammer away from the car to yank the shafts out. then tehe xcase/trans will come apart.

Just a clarification, you don't have to pull both, only the drivers side that goes through the transmission.

The starter is on the opposite side of the motor from the TC. It will in no way stop you from getting the TC off.

You dont need to do all that. All you have to do it take out the axles, remove the 6 17mm bolts, pry inbetween the tranny and the TC and it will seperate until it hits the C clip on the spline (just like the axles have) you just have to put some muscle into it and it will pop off dont be scared. I have done it on my EVO 3 times and walked another guy over the internet a 4th time.

If you pry it off, you can break the c-clips. Use a slide hammer to remove the driver's side output shaft. Then it will come right apart. I just pulled my tranny.

I just rebuild the whole engine from the ground up and i didnt have to take the output shaft out. I mean yes it will work if you do take out the output shaft but yes it will work if you do not also. And there is a very very slim chance of breaking the C clip they are made to compress and expand. And if it were to break you are looking at a $1 part. OUCH!! Now look at how much a slap hammer will cost or how much it will be to rent. Big difference! Anyway you can pick. I can tell you i have done it multiple times without taking out the output shaft. Your decision.

While agree that this method will "work" I will never agree that it's the right way to do it. And I don't find slide hammers expensive at all, a very cheap tool actually.

And that $1 part that you might break? Did you ever think that it could break and pieces could fall into the transfer case after it broke? That could end up being a very expensive fix if you're not farmiliar with taking apart a TC and reassembling it properly.

Do yourself the favor, get the slide hammer, do it the way recommends doing it, and walk away.
