Wastegate vs. Blow-Off Valve

Pardon my ignorance as I have never researched turbo-related parts before, but is there a difference bween a wastegate and a blow-off valve? I understand that there are two different varieties of blow-off valve (recirulating and vent-to-atmosphere) and a wastgate seems to correlate to vent-to-atmosphere.

I believe the wastegate controls the amout of boost your turbo develops by opening while the turbo spools and closing when the correct amount of boost is aquired. It is usually connected directely to the turbo or on the exhaust manifold. The BOV is usually on the cold side of the intercooler piping and "blows off" the pressure inside the pipes when you let off the gas to prevent compressor surge, or the pressurized air blowing back into the turbo and stopping the turbine. This takes pressure off of the turbine wheel and allows for it to keep spinning making spool up quicker in the next gear. VTA is when the BOV shoots the air directly into the atmosphere as it says, and recirculating has a tube that blows the air back into the intake tube.

So I think thats the gist of it. Not 100% sure about the wastegate info tho. I'm sure someone on here will correct me if I'm wrong

BTW, can I have one of your cars? Maybe the Evo since you have newer, better ones and it seems you can afford to let one go

Huge difference but in the end they both release air. I am going to try to explain this (hope my English will help)

1- WG will release air just so air won’t go through the trubo causing to spool even more = more boost. You can say a back door to let air escape instead of going through the turbo

2 BOV- lets say you are on full boost and so much air is going through the throttle body when you decided to slow down. The air that is in the pipes will have no place to go if the TB is closed and shut. If it the BOV was not there your hoses will pop like crazy. The bov will let the air escape out back to the intake.

Hope that helped

Thanks for the responses. I think I understand now.

You cannot have any, but you can buy the M3. It's nice and with the amount of money spent on mods, I could have bought another Evo.

Question Related Question

Hey guys,

I have a related question. Has anyone noticed a difference, or know the pros and cons of VTA vs. recirculation? I currently am VTA but didn't know if it helpped the situation or made the car less effecient? Let me know your guys' thoughts.

Thanks

You should use the search button. But I will answer your question. basically there is no use in running VTA except for the sound. YOu get no benefit, and in fact it may acutally cause you to run lean between shifts, slightly decreasing the performance. PLus u get lotsa prtoblems with idle and stalling. Stick to Recirc. If u want the whistle., get a greddy type S recirc with an aftermaket intake.

VTA is generally regarded bad for performance but some prefer sound over performance so they stick with VTA. Do a search for VTA vs. Recirculating. There are many many many threads and debates about this.
