Bad Smell coming from Balancer Belt

Let a friend drive my car tonight (i love how stories start with that) and during a high speed pass I started noticing a funny smell. Stopped and smelled around for the source, seems like its coming from the Balancer Belt or.. God help me, the timing belt. Its not doing it anymore but for a while there I was worried that something had caught on fire.

Any one else had this issue? Should I just get a balancer belt eliminator rather than replace it? Should I check the timing belt?

I don't think it was the clutch

I highly doubt you could smell the balance shaft belt unless you are a wolf . It is hidden behing a cover and would make it hard to smell. It could have been your clutch.
