Cam noise help!
Cam noise help!
I just got 264/272 HKS cams and cam gears installed. When i reach 5000 rpms it makes a loud, quick ticking noise untill redline. It sounds like knock, but im datalogging and the car never knocks. The car runs great even while making these noise, i just don't think this noise is normal or good. I had the cams reinstalled and it still makes the noise, two shops have told me this normal. Has anyone else had this problem or know if its normal, please let me know?
Yeah i had a similar problem. I would be able to hear a loud vavletrain click at idle. However, it was louder than i thought it should be. So i swiched over to regular oil 10w30(non synthetic) . The problem went away. Now i run Mobile 1 10w30 and lucas oil stabilizer. Half quart of lucas and 4 quarts of mobile 1. I change the oil every 500 to 1000 miles. Hope this will help.
I also have Hks 272/272 cams

With cams there is some noise heard at idle ( lifters just ticking a bit cause of the increased duration and lift. ) but at high rpm's you shouldn't hear it.
Did you switch back to stock and still hearing it ?

I run straight 272's, I have had a slight tick at start up from day one of owning my evo, it got louder when the cams went in, when the car has warmed up for a while at idle it smooths out, same thing if I take it for a quick drive.

old dsm problem... lifter tick... there are people that have this way and that way to cure it useing random oils and fluids....only way to really cure it, pull the lifters out and clean em yourself. as far as tick at high rpm.... get an oil pressure gauge and check your oil pressure....
do some more investigating for the high rpm tick...unless it does it downlow too..

This is exactly it. It is the lifters knocking. Nothing to worry about. Basically it takes times for the lifters to get the oil they need to work properly thats why you get the ticking sound at idle allot of people see. Another thing is the dirt that gets into the lifters. When i had my HKS 272's it did the same thing. Then when i rebuilt the engine i cleaned out the lifters with diesal gas and you wouldnt believe what came out of them and with only 9K miles. Once done i installed everything and the noise was gone. I am just now starting to hear the noise once agian but im not really worried about it. The reason for it to reduce the noise when using thicker oil is becouse the oil lubricates better and is able to stay in the lifters longer then a thinner based oil would. So at start up they are already lubricated more then they would be with a thinner based oil.

for you folks that had the problem after the cam install, it's because the lifters were allowed to fully extend, and they lost thier priming and get stuck. There's 2 ways to get your lifters out to be cleaned... one involves a screwdriver and the potential for projectile rocker arms... the other is pulling the cams out again.
it depends on how brave you are. I just pull the cams...My homemade tensioner tool is the best invention since the wheel....and the fact that it works on the evo too
There's a procedure in the Tech manual to get rid of the tick ..
get the complete info there .. but it's something like this
Warm up the car to normal operating temp
rev the car smoothly to 3000rpms within 15s (need to be at 3000rpms at 15s)
then let the revs fall and idle for 15s
repeat cycle again (for like 15 times or so)
Then listen if you still get the ticks ..
