Gearbox making weird noise
Hi guys,
My gearbox has a funny sound as soon as the car is started, goes something like 'woh,woh,woh,woh,woh....' on idle. Its basically there all the time and the noise is less when the clutch pedal is depressed. Tried removed the idle reverse gear and the noise goes away but then again the input shaft and output shaft is disengaged without the idler gear. Changed the throw out bearing but its still there. What could it be? Anyhelp would be appreciated.

CAr shifts good actually. The transfer case was split open and everything including the seals and bearings replaced as well. I've got a Ralliart LSD in that and that still looks new. Just dunno what the hell the noise is.
I took a quick peek at some of your past posts and it looks like you're putting down some pretty serious power.
From what you seem to be saying is the you get the noise when the car is only in neutral.
Is it there when you are rolling and a gear is engaged?
Do you get a gurgling noise when decelerating like a diesel truck down a hill?
Which gears if you do?
If that's the case it's probably your transmission. They can work pretty well even when they're chewed up.
I doubt your TC is the problem especially w/ the LSD. That would give you a howling noise.
I've seen a lot of guys shreading their clutches with your kind of power and if you've got a twin plate, you could have warped a plate or the floater. Twin plates can rattle and with warpage they can be slightly engaged or touching.
A friend of mine who does lots of work w/ these cars mentioned last week that with higher load pressure plates, there is more pressure on the thrust bearing which is attached to the crank - not to be confused w/ the throw out bearing- and if that goes, then you've got a whole host of other problems to deal with. He said thrust bearing failures are usually caused by long high rpm slips. I hadn't heard of this until last week......
Just a few thoughts, maybe one of these.
You might want to have it diagnosed at your favorite tuner or do a thread search on transmission fixes. There are shops mentioned on evom that specialize in our transmissions.

If the clutch is FUBAR, there's no telling what it looks like. I've seen discs shaped like a potato chip - relatively speaking - many 10's of thousandths of an inch off. When they get like that, they reek havoc on syncros and don't fully disengage. I think I read he had 450 whp so he could have chips ahoy in there.
Although if he changed his throwout bearing, I'd think he would have looked at the clutch........., so it's probably the transmission.
Team Rip.................?

Thanks guys. THe problem started when I sent the car to the mech to have the HKS Twin disc clutch discs replaced. The clutch is new at the moment. At the same time I told him that I had a lot of trouble putting the gear into reverse and have the typical 5th gear grind as soon as the car warms up everytime I drive. So he disassembled the gearbox but not spli the T.C housing. When everything was put back together as soon as the car starts, there's this ' wooh, wooh, wooh ' noise that sounds like a high pitch noise. The noise is there all the time whether the car is accelerating or decelerating in or out of gear and the noise is only slightly less if the clutch pedal is depressed. I've ruled out T.C cause as I mentioned the noise is loudest at the front cover of the main gearbox. You can even feel the vibration when you put your hand on it. Really have no idea what he did to it. Noise wasn't there when I sent in the car.
There's a shield by the oil pan I think. If that got bent, it could be rubbing on the flywheel. Also, if the flywheel is machined improperly, it could be rubbing on the oil pan. I've heard about some flywheels that get really close.
Also, could your floater be hitting the starter?

The shield's fine and the flywheel's never been machined. Dun think its that cause as I said when the reverse idler gear is removed, the sound goes away... Need a transmission specialist on this to clarify..

I just installed a set of HKS GD Pro. I bought the car with 16k mileage, and till date, i've done another 5k clicks on the original clutch. I had a problem of lag (between 1000-3000rpm) and had difficulty climbing up slopes from standstill. Thus, i had it replaced and it had overcome that problem. Now i finally feel that its an evo.
Now the problem I have is some rattling noise (i know about the click click click noise when the clutch is engage but it isnt it) whenever my a/c is switched on and it goes off when i switch it off. I assumed that it was the a/c compressor that was making noise but only to find out that its working perfectly and the noise was actually coming from the gearbox.
I had my gearbox oil changed to Redline MT90 GL-4 (finally some smooth shifting), Motul Motylgear 75W-90 GL-5 for my transfer case and Motul Motylgear 80W-140 GL-r for my rear axle. Would it be the wrong usage of oil in the transfer case? Its really irritating me to have such sound together with the twin plate clicking away when the clutch is engaged.
Will be installing my Walbro fuel pump, FSE fuel regulator and have clutch pedal lowered within these days, therefore, i would appreciate if someone here could let me know the problem i have with the whinning sound... could it be the clutch bearing?
thanks.
