The EGT probe has to be installed in the exhaust manifold. If you install it into the downpipe, you will get incorrect readings (it will always read very low).

Autometer instructed you to out it there? What a crock....put it on the #1 running, close to the cylinder head.

Double check all the wiring. Temps jump around if ther's a bad wire, connection, or ground. Even in the downpipe, the probe and gauge should work. You'll just get lower temp. readings then people who have it in the manifold

it won't be drastically low. only about 100-200 lower. Should definatly be more then 200F. Check you ground make sure its good. If your in doubt about the ground run it straight to the negative battery cable.

install it on cylinder #2 of the manifold. Thats where i have mine, and i have the autometer cobalt. Evomoto.com (a very useful website not in service anymore) told me to install it there for the most accurate readings. F**k the downpipe.

Can be installed in runner #1 or #2. Most do it in the first runner.

Like the others have said: Install the probe either in the #1 or #2 runner of the exhaust manifold about an inch and a half from the head. The number two cylinder is considered to run the hottest. The DP location is lame as it runs about 200*F. cooler than the manifold location.
