IC pipe observation.. Catch can is pointless.

I recently received the Perrin upper IC pipe. When i took apart the entire upper intercooler pipe, I was expecting to see a little bit of oil residue in the pipes after 48K with all the preaching about catch cans. To my suprise the pipes were bones dry. The inside of the hard pipes looked brand new, and i could barely blacken my finger tip rubbing hard in the inner part of the flex tubing. Seems like any blow by oil that might be going through there is getting shot out of the GFB bov. On the back side of this unit, there was a slight bit of oil build up, but nothing to write home about.

This pipe is great if anyone wanted to know. It came with two Sillicon IC elbows as well. I picked up the AMS lower pipe at the same time. So the whole setup cost around 420, but the fit and looks is perfect.

The oil from your valve cover is routed to your upper ic piping It should be depositing the oil in the intake.

The main factor of using catch cans is to keep oil from the valve breather to gunk up the turbo. Some cars belch more oil than others and it will seep into the turbo.

I thought we were supposed to encounter some build up in the IC piping over time. Im just saying there was nothing there at all. But I could also see in the intake manifold and there was nothing up there either. I have no catch can hooked up, I have one sitting in the garage that has been waiting for some room in the engine bay.

The lower IC pipe, and mostly the intercooler itself act as a filter and catch all the crap that would go into a catch can... this reduces the efficiancy of the intercooler.

i think if you have enough oil in your intake track (anywhere) to justify paying 100 dollars for a can to hold it, there are other problems in your system that you should get taken care of first. just a personal opinion though....

if your FMIC is getting gunked up over time, then take it off and have it flushed clean. it will be alot cheaper then 100 dollars and a ton more effective.

but then again you don't get the bling factor of having more chrome in the engine compartment.

that perrin i/c is the one i was using (got burnt up in the yellow 03 fire) it's cool to see it swell up under boost like a balloon. those i/c elbows it came with are a pain to put on if you leave the front bumper on.

I have 8k on mine, and when I pulled the pipes, not a drop either. My WRX would have been soiled within a couple of thoushand miles.

OK well i will take photos of the upper pipes... I will be taking the front bumper off possibly tonight to install the AMS lower IC piping I will definately be able to tell you whats going on then. Ill inspect those points that were mentioned and take photos if its excessively nasty or clean. Im just thinking if a car with almost 50K miles on it has absolutely no oil build up then maybe catch cans arent that neccesary on most evos.

Lukily ill be taking the whole bumper off. I cant wait to put these on.

Hey guys,

Well I paid about $20 for the diy catch can and it definitely catches oil. I've only attached the pcv side so far. When I installed my Samco hoses, there was quite a bit of oil in the intake/maf pipe from the breather side. I did not see any near the intercooler, but I don't think that means a catch can is pointless...
