i think this is what happen to my friends car. he replaced the clutch and sometime later his transfer case went out. not completely sure why, but it assumed that the wrong fluid was put in the TC. especially since the place he went to is known to work on DSM

but n-e-wayz i would also like to know if anyone had replace the 03 TC with a RS one or even a 05 one. im looking to get a front LSD in the future. also has one tried to put in the ACD into a 03 from the 05 models, namely the 6-speed from the MR. cuz im looking into a ACD diff and possibly a 6-speed or maybe a the 5 speed from the GSR or RS. i rather do this than trade my car for the evo MR/IX. or whatever is more cost effective

herbal77, to answer your question, I've had my 03 for over a year (and almost a half) and the first TC went out @ 22k miles --- right after my Exedy twin went in. I have since found out that this is not uncommon.

I'm now over 30k on the car, and I've got just under 300 whp --- but I've been forced to drive it like a honda civic in order to baby the TC!

I OBVIOUSLY need to do something before the TC goes again, and I'm forced to shell out another 1758 for a new OEM transfer case.

I feel like I'm driving a financial timebomb.

Yup. Got one here. Jon at team rip shimed one up for me with a "Tarmac" setting. He's got details on his web site if you want to check it out (teamrip.com).

I've got just about 500 miles on it and so far so good. I haven't wrung it out yet.

It might be my imagination but the steering feels slightly heavier.

Anyone starting to see a pattern here?? T-case's going south shortly after a clutch change!

An abused t-case will have broken spider gears in the front diff. A t-case where the wrong oil used will howl or whine. How much do you trust your mechanics?

Checked it out, but didn't find anything out about the RS TC... care to PM me with the details of your install and pricing?

The steering may feel heavier depending on the dif.

ive heard half the time there is nothing even wrong wit the transfer case, that in reality the damn front open diff is destroyed. ive read a couple stories about this on this site, if remember right.

so if ur TC goes out, make sure to just check your front diff first. it may be the only problem u have. if so upgrade to a LSD and save the TC. i heard the front open diff puts extra stress on the TC

The guys at Shep Racing said the RS TC was stronger, and that the spider gears in a standard TC are so weak its almost funny --- I suggested cryo-treating the original, but they scoffed at that, saying that won't be enough with that weak of a setup.

I also asked them if they'd had any luck with repairing busted TCs, but they said that no parts were yet available, and the ones they fabricated wore out very fast.

If the open-type diff does indeed put extra stress on the rest of the t-case, that may fall within the definition of "design flaw" on mitsu's behalf --- if that is so.

Thanks wrench...

So from the 500 miles you have on the new RS TC, have you noticed any problems with ABS interaction? How is the power delivery compared to the open diff?

Probably because they used "Diamond Gear Oil" which isn't the correct oil for the EVO transfer cases.

I'd stop into the parts department to check & see if they have ever ordered this number, #3775610. This is the part number for the Diaqueen LSD Gear Oil that must be used in the transfer case, no exceptions.

If they haven't then you can be assured they installed the wrong oil.

Here's a golden on-topic question: Has ANYONE crapped an RS transfer case yet?
