solution for sti battle...FQ!

so.....they have this FQ-300 package deal that's good for 305 bhp, this should be available for import or even available here right? this would solve the qualms about holding out for the sti or even a later evo model...this is assuming you don't care about the ACD or AYC (which i don't, i'll never autox).

It's probably what the Mitsu rep had in mind when he mentioned Ralliart. It is a package that comes in new UK Evos and can also be retrofitted. It does not void warranty, at least for UK cars it doesn't.

i was just reading about this guy who test drove one of the fq-300's, and said it was crazy fast. not sure if it voids the warranty here, but like s4 said, it's in the uk. hopefully we can get our hands on it to give a little stiffer competition to the sti!

These packages will probably come from the dealership so I doubt it'll void warranty since it came from the dealership.

the reason to buy the STi over the Evo has nothing to do with horsepower. We all know the 227 vs 271 vs 300 that the WRX, Evo, and STi have can be easily replicated in any of these cars. What is making the STi more appealing to many people on this forum is that Subaru included their active center diff, front LSD, and 6-speed tranny.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see MMC introduce a FQ300 (or whatever) factory package as early as this summer. And hopefully MMC doesn't charge us an arm & a leg for this factory performance option - if it becomes available at all.

i can see the 6-speed, but how many people are actually going to make use of the acd or dccd? like many people have said prior, unless you're autoxing or driving hard on winding roads (said RO-ads, lol) it won't make a difference.

on a side note, what are the benefits of having the 6 gears, besides better fuel economy? isn't the 5 speed it's coming with have close ratios already?

you dont need a 6 speed. thats shifting one more time to get to the exact same ratio. I'll take my 5 speed and front mount over the ****ty subie and besides, boxer engines suck. They have a terrible torque curve.

I thought the 6 speed was (along with possibly a higher top end) useful for the ability to keep you in the power band. If you maintain the engine RPMs, you can stay on boost better. That's what I've read, at least.

off-topic: anyone know what boost level the evo is going to be running at? and if it's around 14-15, can you just get a controller and up it to 17-18 (meaning, can the engine, how it comes stock,
take the abuse)?

the stock boost has been reported at 19 psi. this number is much higher then I would like - simply because I was hoping to take the car from 14 (stock) to 19 and get the HP gains. I guess a larger turbo will probably be in my future....

the main reason I want a 6-speed is simply fuel economy. I want to run at 2500 rpm @ 80 mph. the 2nd OverDrive in the Vette is what allows it to get 25+ mpg. tons o hp and good milage - why not have the best of both worlds?

Actually, for me, the reason is the larger motor... mod for mod the STi will be faster.

I'm a drag racer, not an auto-xer, so that is why I want the "stroker" motor.

Hmm, an FQ package from the Mitsu dealership would most likely raise the price of the Evo to the STi. So there. Also, we have no clue what packages might come for the STi, Subaru has already one-upped Mitsu on Hp & torque claims, who knows what they have planned with Prodrive and STi.

first off, if you are a drag racer then you are wasting your money getting a new Evo (or STi), as there are many cars far better suited to drag racing then the Evo (or STi), both domestic and imported. If you choose to be different and race an Evo (or STi) that's cool, but if you want to be competitive and have a budget, you are hamstringing yourself.

Secondly, more displacement isn't always a good thing. just because an engine has more displacement dosen't make it better or more reliable. I haven't had much time to look into the 2.5L the STi is sporting, but if it is simply a DOHC slapped on the US Spec 2.5 SOHC... not great... if it is the 22b engine punched out... well, then I might just have to think about going back to scooby...
