Muffler delete vs. catback?

I've got a stock MR, planning to autocross it in Stock this season, so I don't have any plans to go with a turboback.

So how would a muffler delete compare with a catback like the Buschur SCCA in terms of sound quality, sound level, weight savings, and performance? Obviously, the catback will save more weight and probably sounds and perform a little better. Is the muffler delete too loud for a daily driver? How does it sound? Like stock, but louder?

Muffler delete is just that (a straight pipe). It sounds like your car is pissed off when you got WOT It is an axel back exhaust and will save 30 lbs over the stock axel back muffler section. The only advantage in doing a cat back is if you get a 3" cat back which will allow for better exhasut flow (arguable, don't ask). The cat backs have mufflers on them (so their sound is logically muffled). Mufflers add weight (and are useless). Their "only" purpose is to keep noise emissions legal. As long as your car is no louder than a Harley (it won't be) you'll be fine with a muffler delete pipe.

I suggest that you get a $200 down pipe, $100 high flow cat, and a $75 manual boost controller along with the muffler delete pipe. This will give you about 30whp for under $600 bucks.

Oh, and buy some new rubber for auto-x. Your Advans will be eaten away in no time. I suggest Nitto's or Falkens for auto-x. Also Toyo if you have a deeper pocket.

Sorry, I'm a little unclear as to what you are asking, and I'm not familiar with Buschur's products. Evo's exhaust is comprised of 4 parts, DP-Cat-IP-AB. Catback generally refers to the IP + AB. (intermediate pipe and axel-back (or muffler)). If you're really asking muffler vs muffler delete pipe, then the muffler delete is probably lighter, louder and a little better performance wise.

I have the Works AB, (along with their DP, high flow Cat, IP), and its loud.

check out this thread. May be helful for you. http://www.norcalevo.net/forums/modu...view_album.php

In stock classes Nitto's and Azenis aren't nearly as nice as stock Advans. Azenis give a floaty feeling to the car. Advans are one of the best street tires. Check into your local regions because some have AStock with the street and race tires combined, some are separate.
A 3" cat back will definetly help with spool up, add some horses, and shed some pounds. A cat delete is not allowed in AS, neither is a larger cat. If i had some cash i'd run some sort of JIC Ti catback. Muffler delete would be quite nice if you can't purchase a cat-back.

But really, it's all in the tires and keeping an eye on pressures. I've beaten plenty of guys on race tires with my advans, until they were blad, lol.

I thought I spelled it out in the first message of the thread, but the most important question I remaining is whether the muffler delete is too loud for a daily driver. I don't necessarily mean "illegally loud"--I mean "uncomfortably loud". I expect noise at WOT--that's not a problem. Does it drone unbearably at cruising speeds?

Thanks.

Agreed. But even Advans don't compare with Hoosiers, Kumho 710's, or Avon Tech R's.

Ours is separate.

I think the Buschur SCCA is a much better value. Sure the Ti is lighter--but at more than twice the price.

Muffler delete would be quite nice if you can't purchase a cat-back.
You consider it streetable?

To me, it is not unbearable, I kinda like the sound and the feel. I spend more time driving in this car with the stereo off just enjoying the sound of the motor than any previous cars. That being said, I have a hard time hearing what passengers in the back seat have to say, my wife says she can hear my car coming a mile away, and I do set off some car alarms as I drive by. I also have to drive slowly in residential areas because I have had comments made.

It does not drone horribly, but you sure do notice the quiet when the motor is off. I suspect my exhaust would be too loud for most.

But, all of this is a pretty subjective thing. Best thing to do is find someone in your area that has a burschur muffler delete or Works AB and listen for yourself!

I ran one for a couple of months (buschur) and it was fine. It is still pretty quite, gives the car just a slight grumble and at wot makes a nice sound that is just a bit louder then stock (great for a dd). I picked up just a few hp and a few lb ft of tq on the dyno and shed 20+ lbs. I decided it was not exactly what I was looking for and got a good deal on a catback so I switched. The catback feels like it has better power, but is much louder. Hope that helps.

I have the Buschur muffler delete and think it was a good purchase. Much better noise than stock but not overly loud. No hesitation about recomending it. Do a search, there are a number of sites with exhaust souond clips.
