An ECU is an engine control unit. Remapping fuel delievery programs and such to boost powerband tendencies, et al.....

ECU = Electronic Control Unit
The ECU controls the Air conditioning, the engine's fuelling, ignition timing, reads all the temperatures (air intake temp, quantity, boost pressure etc)
By changing these parameters, substantial engine output gains can be had. Typically, an Evo with a ECU upgrade and 22 PSI boost makes 350 bhp at 6000 - 6500 rpms and 300 ft/lbs of torque at 3500 - 4000 rpms.
Mitsubishi use the RALLIART ECU.
