EVO 8 Transmission rebuild questions

I've done quite a few searches, and I know several people here have had their trans rebuilt, but I have found very little feedback. So who has had a rebuild, who did the work and what was the final outcome? I believe TRE and John Shepard are doing rebuilds. Is BMTranny doing them?

I have read about a few people who are really really happy with TREs work.

I am in the process of having this done. My desicion rested on experiance/reputation and ease of transportability. TRE has a shipping plan; the boxes come with precasted foam inserts in the boxes (tranny and t-case). Slips right in. The owner is very knowledgeful as I had a chance to chat with him on the telephone. What I really enjoyed was he shared an enthusiam of different vehicles and has a passion for gears (if it has a bevel, then he's all over it i think)

I just cant see how people can live without a good rebuild especially if they race from the dig constantly; granted I wont have money for cams or other auto stuff but I know I wont be that schmuck with broken spider gears (lsd insert).

We have seen both TRE and Shepherd transmissions for the DSMs, and both are top notch. Can't go wrong with either.

with the re-build...is it just stronger?
or is it geared towards 1/4 mile performance?

Jon reworks all of the gears, stack heights and everything that effects the shifting. I have had his in now for 3k miles and this thing is great! Downshifting is so easy it is scary, I can get 1st gear at 30mph no problem. I can't wait to get this out to Gingerman (road track) to enjoy the shifting. I can be pretty hard on trannies and this thing is more then ROCK SOLID! Upshifts at full throttle are a dream, I have never missed the 2-3 shift which I can't say for the stocker.

His trans was one of the most enjoyable mods I have made to my car, it is so smooth and lovly to shift. Even in -5 degree air this thing still shift great.

If anybody is going to touch your trans it should be Jon.

I just got my spare transmission back from Jon at TRE. His team performed their TRE Race Rebuild service. I think they have reasonable prices and great turnaround time. The round trip shipping makes it easy. You really don't want to be screwing around with finding a box and packing it correctly.

Here's the breakdown:

TRE Race Rebuild...................$500
synchro, 3rd..........................$33.65
synchro, 5th..........................$27.40
synchro, 4th..........................$21.36
synchro, 1st...........................$55.40
synchro, 2nd..........................$55.40
synchro, rev...........................$27.40
hub sleeve, 5th/rev...............$42.05
hub sleeve, 1st/2nd..............$42.08
hub sleeve, 3rd/4th...............$47.61
spring, 3rd gear (2)................$6.08
spring, synchro, 1st/2nd (2)...$7.78
spring, synchro, reverse (2)...$7.78
input shaft seal......................$7.17
axle seal.................................$4.45
center diff bolts (10)...............$21.50
speedo pulse gen...................$30
final drive gear........................$145.82
output shaft............................$210.58
round trip shipping..................$150

Total........................................$1443 .69

Note: According to Jon this particular transmission had "chipped teeth from a misalignment issue and [the damage] was compounded from hard launching." This cost me ~$350 extra in parts to correct this issue. If you've been launching hard by dumping the clutch at 5-6K rpm out of the dig like the previous owner of this transmisson did, chances are you will have similar damage. Bear in mind that this transmission only had 20,000 miles on it when I sent it in for the rebuild. If you've got issues with your transmission now, the sooner you get it in for service the less likely you'll cause further damage your transmission.

propellerhead: I see you have a tranny for sale. Did you buy a new tranny to rebuild, or did you buy an already rebuilt one? I'm confused as to why you have two. Can I buy one from TRE without having to ship mine?

Mine had an alignment problem with the output shaft and final gear also. My final was chipped and the output shaft had started to crack/tear at the root of several gear teeth.

I was one of the lucky guys that hadn't inflicted serious damage to my tranny.

I have two transmissions. I've got my original transmission and I've got a spare core that I purchased from a local guy who had totaled his Evo. The spare core is what I just had rebuilt. My original transmission is in pretty good shape but it prolly needs a rebuild.

You can buy a brand new TRE-Spec transmission from TRE. I think they are asking $2650 for them. If you can find a decent used core you should be able to put together rebuilt transmission for less than the cost of a new one. I think the one I rebuilt was probably close to a worse case scenario and I still came out ahead compared to buying a new unit. Your mileage may vary...
