What?!? No where NEAR that tight. The cam gear adjustment bolts on the AEM gears shold be 15 ft-lbs...which is not tight at all. If you're worried use loctite. They should be progressively tightened in a star pattern. Remember, these are lightweight aluminum gears.

I don't have the spec for the cam bolts handy, but it's in the neighborhood of 45-65. Make sure you find out the exact torque before you start and use a torque wrench.

In my book "as tight as you can" is about 140 ft-lbs!

This method of cam repacement makes me nervous, I know many do it but I wonder how many of the bigs shops do it this way. Is the oil pump driven of the timing belt in the evo? How are the balance shafts positioned? Are they on the timing belt or do they have there own belt? What about the tensioner, some cars need a new one anytime tension is relieved. I'm sure it is a pain to remove all accesories to remove the whole timing cover, but the consequences of skipping a tooth or having a belt misaligned on a pulley seems too grave. I'm new to the 4g63, so I would like to see a diagram (hint, hint). On other cars I always remove the front cover. Can some of the more experienced chime in on this. Thanks.

^^^^^People use that method everyday with no problems.Including the big shops.

Though it is a good idea to do the belts as well depending on the mileage.
The main concern is the independent balance shaft belt. If it breaks and gets tangled up in the timing belt, it can make it jump time and there go the valves. I've personally seen this happen recently on a DSM.

The timing belt itself is pretty stout and should be good for at least 80k, weather tension is broken or not.

Myself, I like to err on the side of caution and I will be replacing the balance shaft and timing belts when I do my cams. Lancer shop has some nice heavy duty ones that I have been eyeballing for my upcoming cam install.
