Seemingly common Evo problem..
Seemingly common Evo problem..
Hello everyone,
I am a new member here, and a first time Evo owner as of 6 weeks ago.
Its silver and I love this car! Ive had several american muscle cars ( I still have a 500hp 89 Iroc-Z) Anywho - heres my problem, Ive seen each discussed, but no real answers.
When I bought the car it had 13k miles on it. It came Mitsu certified used with HKS exhaust, HKS cold air intake, aftermarket BOV (unknown brand), Silicone hoses, and what appears to be aftermarket tubing to and from the intercooler, as there are some welded brakets on it that arent used, and the one to the intake is rubbing against the hood. The car screamed! Its got a WORKS sticker in the trunk. (Im curious as to if the computer was WORKS tuned)
So at 15k miles, the SES light came on, but ran perfect. I took it to the dealer, they said it was a random misfire code, the cleared it and also gave me the latest software update. (this was in Feb.) After that, the car didnt seem nearly as quick in the midrange, and the car wont rev past 4500 -5000 rpm at full throttle without coughing and blowing all the boost out the wastgate (or BOV, not sure which it hits first) The dealer said there was a new software release coming by the end of Feb that was supposed to fix the problem. SO.. yesterday the my dealer just got in the software, they updated my car. It definately runs stronger, and gets close to 6k before it coughs under full throttle.
Now they want to start looking into the wastgate, as the code stopped coming up as random misfire, and is now showing wastegate solenoid error. I dont think anything is wrong with the wastegate thought.. (personal opinion)
Should I just look into getting an aftermarket reflash now.. has anyone here had the exact same thing happening and actually found a fix?? Does any aftermarket flashes fix this problem.. more so is this still a over sensitive knock sensor picking up tranny resonance or something else..?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide me fellow Evo owners!

stock reflash
It sounds like you had a tuned flash, that was overwritten by the dealer with a stock tune. Also, aftermarket intakes may require a reflash to run properly. The MAF is very sensitive to changes and the stock tune may not be happy about the intake.
Either way the stock tune will not take advantage of the aftermarket parts, and may also be causing it to run poorly.
good luck

Thanks for the reply!
Well.. found out some very interesting and exciting news. Just thought Id let everyone know. I called WORKS, they were very friendly, helpful and knowledgable.
They had my VIN in their system and had indeed put their P2 flash on that computer. So with all the parts that are on my car, plus the boost hose that runs to the boost controller solenoid, the factory program sees too much boost and kicks in the fuel cutoff. All I have to do is send in my ecu for a reflash. I Knew the car felt slower after the dealer re-flashed the ecu
Also found out its not just the tubing that is aftermarket, I have a larger intercooler too. Sweet.
WORKS just got themselves a customer for the life of my EVO. And probably any other EVO I buy after this one.
Im a Mech. Engr for a medical mfg. company, and good customer service always wins my business.
