Piecing together your own kit??

Well my buddy and I have been discussing turbo options for our Evo's. There are a good number of very capable kits out there, AMS,RNR Turbo Trix etc. There are also some vendors who don;t offer kits but do offer Evo speced turbo's designed for the car. We are thinking about assembling our own kit, Turbo, wastegate, manifold ourselves as this seems to be a much cheaper route than purchasing one of these kits. My question is, do you think there are significant downfalls to this or do you think power wise and careful consideration to components you can put yourself right in the ballpark power performance wise doing it on your own? It seems that you can put one together for about $2500-$3000 vs. paying $3700-$4400. What do all of you think. Any input greatly appreciated.

You're usually paying for the R&D and luxury of having a bolt on kit. You can definately save money by building it yourself to your own specs, but the turbo kit vendors have tested and tested again to make sure every piece works together perfectly. Not saying you are unable to do this, but they make it easy.

There is no reason you can't do it on your own... start with the turbo, and work around that... find which turbo would best suite your needs, and get the manifold, o2 housing, and external needed to support what you are doing.

Good luck!

If you know which combo parts works good then ill say do it. My friend who owns Jspec.com told me its the cheapest route and you save a lot of money. Told me a Garret turbo cost him like 400-600 bucks if I remembered correctly

Hey guys, I really appreciate the feedback. This is what we are thinking also. You could save alot of money, but component choices are crucial to having an efficient system when you are finished.

I would say go w/ your own kit. Who knows maybe you can peice something together a whole lot cheaper, and discover a whole lot more horse power this way. Go for it man, just make sure you know what your doing and tune properly. Happy TUNING!

Go with your own kit.

there are so many companies out there that have been making good reliable parts for the 4g63 that its not hard to find what your looking for cheaper.

Slowboyracing.com makes a nice GT35r (i think thats it) turbo with supporting mods

Forcedperformance.com is similiar

of course

roadraceengineering.com
buschurracing.com

etc

I will keep all of you posted, we are really researching our parts, so they work well together. Might be a little while but I will let you know the results.
