Should I make Ti IC pipes?
Should I make Ti IC pipes?
I'm trying to get a feel for it.
I know a guy that can make Ti intercooler pipes for our cars. Mandrel Bent, flanged, coated, etc. I'm going to get measured next week and post pics. I'm not interested in making money off this, just curious if anyone wants that kind of bling in their car and I'll make it happen.
I also posted in Classifieds.

oooh how much is the question. wow... mandrel bent ti huh? that's nuts! where you find a ti mandrel bender... like... 20 years ago there wasn't even a such thing! thank the US for the sr71 eh?
ok read your classified's post... this is awesome... 600 for the whole set eh? so it'll be flanged for the bov you mean?
just a few questions... i hear ti doesn't like other metals to be welded to it.. you got this part taken care of?
and which pipes will you be mocking off of? i suggest the ams pipes.
oh yeah... interested.

I'm going to try to locate a pic of the AMS kit. This is work preliminary right now. The Ti mandrel bender is courtesy of a bunch of guys sitting around an airforce base with nothing to do... ;-)

That's why I'm posting the question. The wieght saved from Ti is not alot, but it definitely would look cool if you are buying stuff like ARC Ti heatshields and radiator shrouds. The pricing of $600 is the high end ($450 would be the low end). I won't know until next week what the actual price should be.
For myself I may get a Ti upper for show and an Al lower for cost effectiveness.

I would be very interested to see this setup as mandrel bent titanium is very very difficult to make. Ti is such a brittle metal that the bends end up having either a very large radius (won't work for piping) or are not true mandrels and will end up closer to crush bent. Also, the metal is somewhat difficult to find in any diameter bigger then 2". Al is a much better material for piping imo as it's heat dissipation properties are excellent, mandrels are easy to find and make, and is very lightweight.

Ti is more durable then Al. Ti can with stand higher temps.
Ti does not disipate heat as fast as Al, but it the difference is small and it would be hard to measure outside of a lab.
Ti is for those that want something different under their hood. It would definitely stand out in a car show.
The guy I work with can flange for just about any BOV. The prototype with be flanged for a Greddy Type-S.
If we can't make the lower IC pipe work in Ti, I'm just going to order one in Al and then have him do the upper in Ti and also look at doing the intake tube.
