Transfer case question
I'm trying to figure out a sound on my car, and I have what is probably a stupid question...
If a transfer case was making noise on the road, would it also make noise if the car were "driven" with all four tires in the air(on jackstands)? Or, would the drivetrain need to be under "load" for the sound to be noticed?
I have a higher pitched hum sound up until 65 mph, which changes to a deeper tone below 25 mph on the road, but I didn't hear anything with the tires off the ground. I also checked the fluid, and there were very little shavings in the oil, less than the last change. Is it safe to say that this sound is comming from my worn RA-1's?

You're driving on worn out Toyo RA-1 "track" tires? I can't say for sure, but I can definitly tell you that those are **** loud... my fairly new Kuhmo Supras are noisy as is... I use RA-1s at the track, and I can hear every groove in the road.

On regular streets, I would imagine they are **** loud... since on tracks they're pretty damn **** loud... and if it's a consistant hum (acceleration, deceleration, and cruising) I would guess (again, just a guess) that it's certainly not the TC, I THINK the TC only makes noise at accel and decel, if that's not the case, then I can stop worrying about mine.
The best thing to do would be to do it on a dyno where there's resistance, but the tires won't be making the famed "tire noise"

Sooo...will a blown transfer case still whine loudly when the car is up on jackstands and you press the gas pedal and spin the tires?
Edit...Come to think of it...yes it will. I remember putting my friends up on stands and the TC whining very loudly!!
